Question Bad Ion cymbal: hits but also "misses"

    Hi all,

I have an Ion cymbal that's starting to 'go bad'. I was using it as the ride. When I hit it, the gems explode, but I'll still hear a clank and the meter drops. During a long run of ride notes, it's just clank clank clank and the meter drops into the red, even though they're exploding and I'm getting points.

I've switched the cymbal to a crash, obviously gets hit less often, but still I get crash-clank.

(The replacement cymbal works fine, gems explode and no clanking.)

What's going on when RB registers a hit but seems to also consider it a "miss"?

    Just curious.

    B

It's hitting twice (or more). The first hit registers the gem, the 2nd causes the "clank" and c-c-c-combo breaker.

Man, it takes FOREVER to get a reply on here.

That makes perfect sense. I'll take a look at it tomorrow & see what I can tighten on the stuttering one.

    Thank you both!

ION cymbals are notorious for this. They're terrible quality. You should replacethem if you can afford it. Doesn't even matter what you replace them with. None are as bad as the ION ones.

It is double hitting. Here was my fix:

Take the backing off of the cymbal, there are quite a few screws. The first thing you'll probably notice is the female ends used to hold the screws in have broken away from the main cymbal frame. That is part of the problem. This causes a vibration when hit and registers multiple hits.

I replaced the screws with larger ones to start with, but even that wore down too. I ended up taking off the rubber and driving small bolts all the way through. I used a tapered screw head so it would lay flush on the cymbal frame and allow the rubber to go back onto the frame. I then put a folded-up paper-towel strip in the box that is screwed back onto the cymbal. This muffles any outside noise the cymbal may be picking up.

I'll try to get some pictures of this fix going. It seems to be a reoccurring theme here and my fix worked pretty good.

Take $50 bucks to your local Guitar center or Whatever store you have and buy a new cymbal! The stock Ion cymbals suck, mine were double registering right out of the box brand new. Rolands will cost you $120 and wont last any longer then a pintech or a simmons which are more in the $50-60 range.
Actually the pintech's may even be less then that and I have heard alot of good feedback. I personally had 3 Rolands and they lasted me a 2 years and now I am on to simmons and they are every bit as good and half the price.
    Wishlist:
Metallica:RB w/ Lead, Bass, Rythm guitar-w/pro upgrades for all
    harmonies, Keys/Pro Keys
    drums & pro drums

    and EVERY song!

i just took out the screws and glued that box to the cymbal, had no more problems since.

100+ hrs of RB per month since release. 90% of that gameplay was drums RB2/pro drums RB3. They have taken a beating!!

What I meant by 3 roland's was Hi-hat, ride and crash. All three were bought around the same time in oct of 2008. All three took a **** around the same time as well so I moved on to three simmons about a year and a half ago and there still kickin
