IONs are $300, and they're a dumbed-down electronic drum kit. If you want a real electronic drum kit, you're going to be spending at least $500, and even then that's kind of low.

The MIDI adapter in drum mode does work in all other RB games.

I'd prefer not to spend that much. I just ordered some Audio Technica ATH-AD900 headphones and a GTX 580 for my computer, so I'm low on cash, but want a kit to play on soon. I'll probably just go with the Ions unless anyone can find a good cheap e-kit.

When/if I get the Ions, is there anything else that I'll need other than the adapter for the pedal?

You don't even need the pedal adapter if you use the ION pedal. To answer your question, no. The ION's are $199 plus shipping, so that should be reasonably within your price range.

and you can get an ION with 2 cymbals or no cymbals (if i remember correctly)
so if you want to spend even less you could go with the one without cymbals

the cymbals are pretty bad, so you could always get a different type of cymbal later on if you want them

I found a core set for $180 online including shipping, which is nice. I was going to use the pedal from my MadCatz portable drum set because it's easier to play songs with double bass for me. Those adapters are only a few bucks anyway.

And I'll probably pick up a pair of Scojos or plastic sticks too.

I got REALLY lucky with the deal I got for my ION set. It was used, but just barely. It was the core set with two cymbals, for only $165, free shipping. I'm planning on getting a third cymbal soon, but it was an awesome deal.

If that's the case, snag the ion base kit now, and squirel money away later for cymabals later. You can put in better cymbals than the stock ones, and eventually upgrade your kit to a real kit over time.

Me, I could never go back to playing without cymbals.
