    3/20 DLC Discussion - Men at Work (Down Under & Overkill) and Santana (Smooth)!

One of their best known tracks, “Down Under” – the second single from 1981’s Business as Usual – became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard charts in the year of its release. The Aussie band found similar success with 1983’s album Cargo, and their second single off the record, “Overkill.” Both tracks come to the Rock Band Music Store on March 20th.

    Finding his first success in the late ‘60s, guitarist Carlos Santana is nothing short of a legend. His band Santana returned to mainstream success in 1999 with their album, Supernatural, thanks in no small part to the hit single “Smooth.” A collaboration with Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas, the single rocketed to the top of worldwide charts and won three Grammy Awards, including one for “Song of the Year.” This certified platinum single comes to Rock Band next week, with an optional Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade.

    Available on Xbox 360, Wii™ and PlayStation®3 system (March 20th, 2012):

    * Men at Work – “Down Under” O
    * Men at Work – “Overkill” O
    * Santana – “Smooth” O X

    (These tracks will be available in Europe on PlayStation®3 system March 21st)

    Tracks marked with “O” feature support for keyboards; tracks marked with “X” will offer Pro Guitar and Pro Bass expansions for $0.99 per song.

    Price:

    $1.99 USD, £.99 UK, €1.49 EU (160 Microsoft Points, 200 Wii Points™) per song

    $0.99 USD (100 Wii Points™/80 Microsoft Points), £0.59 UK, €0.79 EU per song for eligible Pro Guitar/Pro Bass upgrade

    Men At Work and Santana Singles First Impressions

    I'm gonna start with Down Under, because I listened to the first half of the song before because someone on the forums nagged me because I never heard of Men At Work before. And because it's the first song listed
    Yeah, I listened to this part before. The vocals are pretty nice, they're catchy and stuff. The lyrics are also pretty nice, so I would definitely say it would be fun to sing. The parts that aren't the chorus can use a bit more variety though, since they get pretty monotonous fast. It's not bad, it just gets repetitive. Even in the chorus, the vocals don't do much to distinguish themselves there from the rest of the song. The instruments are nice and complement each other song well, which is good. The song works and holds together, it just gets old. That would explain why I didn't listen to the song the whole way through the first time. It just gets repetitive. It's nice, though.

    Next up is Overkill! The intro starts... It sounds familiar! It reminds me of...CSI?
    No idea why. The vocals tell me that I've never heard the song before, but the intro sounded familiar. And I like the vocals in this song on the same level as Down Under. They seem to have a bit more variety, but they take a hit in the catchiness category. It starts to drag like Down Under too, but I guess that's how Men At Work rolls? Dunno. The instruments take a complete back seat until that... very uneventful guitar solo (it feels uneventful even though it's happening),which bothers me a bit. I think my statement on the vocals can be extended to the rest of the song. It has a lot more variety than Down Under... but it's just not as catchy. It's not bad, though.

    Smoo- :I
    I know this song. I dislike it. The instruments hit every wrong chord with me and the vocals just rub off the wrong way. Dislike dislike dislike. I can't connect that the same band who made Black Magic Woman made this
    Not that I like Black Magic Woman. They just sound completely different.

    All in all... This week was pretty okish!
    Definitely not as good as last week and probably a little better than the week before. The Men At Work stuff is pretty nifty, but Smooth is just... blegh ;_;
    There isn't much to say besides the reminder that these are my first impressions and they can change in the future. Hell, they did for Hall & Oates, so it might change for Men At Work! O:

    This week in terms of songs:
    Down Under
    Overkill
    Smooth
