Yes, and if you wanted to replicate Rock Band 2's Tour in Rock Band 3, you could play each leg of RB3's Tour multiple times.

For me, one of the big factors of the Road Challenge not really feeling like tour (a videogame tour anyway), is that the setlist are so short. The Road Challenge is actually not bad, and I think it would be similar enough to the good parts of the RB2 tour if the setlists were, or at least could be, longer. Becuase don't get me wrong, I love the way setlists are made in Road Challenges, but it just feels weird to be playing a mode where you hop from venue to venue playing 2 to 3 songs. I loved playing RB2 and getting to the big venues, and playing this long custom or random setlists. It just made it feel more like I had progressed in the game. Obviously not everyone is going to want to play an 8 song setlist at every venue, but in terms of the "narrative" part of the game, it's something I'd like to see be an option.
Rock Band, for me, was always about pretending that I was in a band, and that we were hopping from venue to venue, playing shows, making money, changing our image, getting fans. That's just something that maybe eroded a bit in the Road Challenge mode. I would also say that in RB1 and RB2, the idea of "playing venues gets you fans and money" feels like there's a justified correspondence. Whereas in RB3 we have "Get 100% of the Notes in This Green Day Solo gets you 1,000,000 fans" maybe just feels a little more arbitrary. I played deep into RB2 for the vague narrative, and I don't imagine that's why most people do. I'd love to see it again though.
I would love these groups in RB: Daft Punk, Ratatat, The Blood Brothers, Oingo Boingo. That's all.
You are referring to duels.
Harmonix said they wanted to integrate the experience as an entire hud. Tour mode was replaced by challenges and progression was tracked in quickplay as well. They wanted to change it, but it was not well received by those that enjoyed tour mode.
Of course quick play will have more gameplay time. Under your logic, NHL 13 should rid season mode because quick matches overpower it to the point that it looks pathetic.

me, my family, all my friends agree with the OP. it's bad enough that most of the on-disc songs are terrible... but the lack of a solid career mode just killed the game. in my opinion, RB3 is the worst addition to the series... it was over-all downgrades to the things I loved about RB1 and 2... even the animations and graphics were total downgrades... and don't get me started on the backgrounds... or lack of multi-player... or "band-feel"... RB3 disappointed me to no end.
and BTW OP, you will never live the first post down, the fanboys and girls here are rabid, violent monsters and never let stuff go and will never admit there's anything wrong with anything RB...

To anyone that thinks "whining" about tour mode is a waste of time, it was because of such feedback the stage kit was patched back in. Harmonix appreciates feedback, and listens to it's fans. At this point there's most likely no chance it will be patched into RB3, but that feedback will help for future titles.
I never thought of the Road challenges as a career mode. Road challenges are only part of the goal system. I always thought the goals were what defined the career.
Grinding out the same song 20 times or more got kinda stale. I'm glad they went to using goals for a career, even if it is only for a change of pace. I'm guessing a bigger version of RB2's career mode would be like making RB2.5, instead of a whole new game.
