I won't buy overly difficult pro guitar tracks. There's just no point.

Who do I have to get drunk in order to get "Red Solo Cup" in Rock Band?
I usually buy for what I enjoy or what will kill at parties or get togethers. As far as difficulty goes, if the song I like is somewhat difficult I usually drop the difficulty down a notch. I personally know that if RB ever gets DMB and the songs are tiered difficult that will not stop me from snatching those things up ASAP!!
DMB IS IN RB!

I tend to not buy songs that are devil tier even if I like them. I teeter back and forth on this issue from time to time though.
Sometimes my friends will influence my decision, and I'll buy a killer hard song. Then....they will roll through it like it's a simple walk in the park, while I'm about to give myself a coronary trying to play it on drums. and...If that's not bad enough, I feel the need to then, apologize, for being so sucky. I really hate when that happens :P
I almost exclusively buy songs I like. I play expert pro drums but I'm not that good at it. Up to the 3rd or 4th tier I can usually hang but I have very few FCs. I think that the only song I'm number one on is "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes.
That being said, I bought "Polly." And the Slayer pack. If I like it, I buy it, even if there's no way I'll be able to keep up with Dave Lombardo in this lifetime.

When I first started RB, I tended towards picking songs based on high difficulty; at that point, it was all about the novelty of seeing how far I could go and still pull off 5 stars, or even gold stars - mainly on guitar. After a certain point, difficulty became less of a consideration because a) there's only so much Megadeth or Evile you can play before your wrists start to hate you, and b) there was no reason I couldn't get similar enjoyment out of lesser-tiered songs. I still find that the songs that are 1-dot or 0-dot tend to wear out their welcome quickly. But as long as there's some challenge, or some variety, then I don't discriminate too much based on difficulty.
Nowadays, though, I think twice before buying a song with devils. With RBN pushing the tiering standard higher and higher, and with a few purchases turning into a complete disaster (*coughPacketFliercough*), I'm finding out that there's an upper limit to what's an acceptable level of challenge. A little extra diligence is needed before springing for those songs these days, because the "Impossible" label is taken far more literally than it used to be.
Exactly my point. I can't hang with Charlie Benante, or most of Nick Menza's work, or most of the faster Metallica, either. I love to listen to intricate, complicated music, but the Expert charts are close enough to the real thing (and require quite a lot of skill) that I would have to quit my job to learn how to do that properly.
My point was that being primarily a drums player, I've bought one of the simplest drum songs available and multiple extremely difficult (official) DLC tracks for drums. Why? Because I like the song. I'm not against new stuff, but there's a much higher bar to be met for me to want it. Yeah, it's only two bucks, but I'm buying these for replayability.
