I am fortunate that most songs that I would find difficult (and by this I mean frustratingly difficult) tend to be metal songs and I don't care for a lot of metal. Naturally there are exceptions, but generally speaking. And since I play and enjoy multiple instruments chances are that if I find a song frustrating on my main instrument (pro drums) I'll enjoy it on something else. So I buy what I like.
There is one notable exception- Soundgarden's Jesus Christ Pose. I love the band, I really like listening to the song and I have everything else by them. Despite that I'll probably not purchase it because I already know I won't enjoy it and would probably never play it. I've played the song in real life in a real band. It frustrated me to no end. I'm sure all of us from time to time come across a song that, for whatever reason, no matter how much we like it or practice it or want to enjoy and master it, we're just not going to. That's one of mine, so I think I'll stick to listening to it.
But I believe in this and it's been tested by research: he who [edit] nuns will later join the church.

Funny you mention that song in particular. Seems just about anytime someone picks that song online, the drummer quits.

I find those songs extremely challenging but fun on pro drums. On pro keys they're totally nuts, but I assure you that if you're quite good on drums, you won't regret getting them.

I buy the songs that I like to listen to. I play the songs that are fun to play. Since songs have multiple instruments, then any "good" song might be chosen by another player for that instrument, for example, vocals. If it's chosen, and I can't play it on my chosen instrument because it is too difficult, then I either change instruments, or play on no fail mode and muddle my way through. Somewhere between RB2 and RB3 we stopped caring about score, so it's all about enjoying the songs, and playing along, whatever the difficulty.

For me it's entirely about the charts, I have infinite other ways to enjoy music. No matter how much I like the song, if the chart is uninteresting or unfun I'm not going to play it. On the other hand there have been several horribly bad songs that are fun to play.

I buy songs that are both difficult and songs I like, used to just be difficult but I would rather play songs I actually like (looking at you, mayhem pack). I actually liked the slayer pack, outside of raining blood. I almost never buy non-difficult songs unless I like them so much as to justify them not being difficult (looking at you, yes pack).

I buy whatever looks fun. Any 80msp RBN song gets a look (unless it's Metal), and I get most regular DLC (again, unless it's Metal). I'll even buy *some* metal if it isn't the growly kind.

This. I'll buy a song I like no matter the difficulty. The cut off point is Polly which I love but doubt I'll ever buy.

After reading all the posts thus far..awesome forum..

    Me?

I have been subject in the past to not purchase a song based on "easiness". One such example is "Smile Like You Mean It" by The Killers. Even though it was part of a pack, I figured it to be extremely boring. I regret this as it is a great song.

On the other hand, I do enjoy a challenge and I am extremely stubborn when it comes to "difficult" songs. I have Dragon Force as well as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satrini, and soon I will own the new Slayer pack that was just released.

Like many of you have already stated it really is about the music. I tend to look at the drujms track first as I am very good (in the top 2%) and then guitar. However, sometimes it shines on vox, bass, or keys. In seldom rare cases it's just amazing no matter what instrument it is.

Typically though, I weigh towards Drums and Guitar. The Pink 01 Pack that is coming out seems rather dull, but actually looks quite fun on the drums and perhaps keys portions.

As far as actually playing, I normally play solo or on-line with others, and I tend to start with very easy simple warm-up songs and by the end of the night I'm trying to beat Ground and Pound .. to no avail.. =(

In the end it depends on the song and 9/10 times I will purchase. But it has to have some type of pulse on at least one instrument.
