Kind of getting off-topic here, but it is interesting to think just how much of an effect others have on the things that we like, even the things that we consider most personal to us. With music, for example, most of us probably find new music through recommendations, be it from friends or people on the internet. And of course, you could certainly argue that popular music is only popular because it is forcefully put in front of people. Many people only listen to songs when they become popular, and through that, they become more popular... in a lot of ways, the record companies tell us what to like.

Regardless, the best thing to do is to not care about that crap and just continue liking what you like.

I was just always under the impression that it's easier to buy music these days as opposed to the 60s and 70s, and getting mad that there are more sales for today's artists is like getting mad that Gears of War 3 will have more sales than a classic from the 80s

    Totally agree with this statement.

Well that is definitely part of it. Also, it is ridiculously easy to manufacture a pop record this day and age when all it takes is a computer and auto tuning some retch with a "pretty face", as opposed to styles of music that require instruments and band members that can play said instruments.

The plus side on this era is that even more obscure bands can have their music distributed better now a days then they ever were able to in the past, what with the internet, indie labels, satellite radio, and social networking sites.
