Not guilty . Only exception for me is I really had a thing for Linkin Park when I was 11. I think my saving grace was that I really didn't even listen to music until I was, like, 16. Not having older siblings that can tell me what music to like is an asset some times.

I would agree... if you replaced "Ke$ha" with about any other artist . Except for possibly Maroon 5. Ke$ha is currently my least favorite person making music.

    This is a thing?

I never cared for the pop charts. If I wanted any genre to get popular it'd be progressive rock/metal. That isn't gonna happen, so I'm not even gonna try buying several copies of every Dream Theater, Rush, Yes, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, etc. album ever released. I have better use with my money.

But I just liked Linkin Park because I thought One Step Closer was badass all on my own! Honest! XD

I actually don't even hate Linkin Park these days. I seriously thought I was unique for listening to them, when everyone else was listening to Usher or Britney Spears.

Whatever the specific example, somewhere along the line you were a sheep. YES YOU WERE. So was I. So was all of us.

Nonconformity for the sake of nonconformity... that kinda makes my point too

The biggest non-conformists are often the ones who are capable of relying entirely on their own mind really.

Oh yeah, I was a total tool when it came to lots of things. The best example I can think of is that I would never read anything when I was a kid, because I thought it was boring and never attempted to verify whether that was true or not. For music I was pretty safe though. I actually wasn't not-conforming-for-the-sake-of-non-conforming, if that's at all believable. I just happened to hear this "nu-metal" thing one day, decided I liked it, and wore out all their records over the next few years. At about 15 or 16 I decided to give this "music" thing a try.

Only later did I find out that I was listening to bland music that angry teenagers rage to

I listen to the music I listen to because I think it sounds good. True, throughout most of my life I came to know of music thanks to pop charts and popular YouTube videos. But I didn't listen because everyone else did. I listened only to the songs I liked. Same still stands today, with all the genres I listen to. I like music for the sound and the feel. I listen to anything from pop to black metal.

Am I saying that I never listen to music out of conformity? No. I usually discover new songs via suggestions or links and such from other people. But what I am saying is that I listen to music for me, not to fill myself into some sort of clique or anything.

Thus is why I'm not going to stock up on classic rock albums. I don't care if the stuff I listen to is as popular as the stuff I don't listen to, I listen to it for me.
