This is something of a hybrid list, mixing up a "50 Current Favorites" list with a "50 Games I've Wasted the Most Time On" list. I hesitate to list too many games in any one series, especially for games like Rock Band where the current release pretty much renders past releases completely obsolete. But even then, some sequels stand out and demand to be counted.

The machines in parentheses are the ones where I played these games the most.

The higher titles are my bigger favorites, but the exact order isn't necessarily set in stone.

    1. Rock Band 3 (Xbox 360)
    2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade)
    3. Burnout 3: Takedown (PlayStation 2)
    4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 + Knuckles (Sega Genesis)
    5. The Addams Family (pinball)
    6. DarkStalkers (arcade) / Night Warriors: DarkStalkers’ Revenge (Sega Saturn)
    7. Twilight Zone (pinball)
    8. Road Runner (arcade / Commodore 64)
    9. Rampage (arcade)
    10. Paperboy (arcade / Commodore 64)
    11. Marble Madness (arcade)
    12. Burnout Paradise (Xbox 360)
    13. Scorched Earth (PC)
    14. Portal 2 (Xbox 360)
    15. Galaga (arcade)
    16. Joust (arcade / Atari 2600)
    17. Eight Ball Deluxe (pinball)
    18. Defender (arcade / Commodore 64)
    19. Crystal Castles (arcade / Atari 2600)
    20. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (Xbox 360)
    21. Descent (Mac / PC)
    22. Tempest 2000 (Atari Jaguar) / Typhoon 2K1 (PC)
    23. Raiden DX (arcade)
    24. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (arcade)
    25. Yars’ Revenge (Atari 2600)
    26. OutRun (arcade / Commodore 64)
    27. Arkanoid (arcade / Apple II)
    28. Mario Bros. (arcade / Apple II)
    29. Moon Patrol (arcade / Apple II)
    30. Road Fighter (arcade)
    31. Portal (Xbox 360)
    32. Food Fight (arcade / Atari 7800)
    33. Centipede (arcade / Atari 2600 / Atari 5200)
    34. Dig Dug (arcade / Atari 2600)
    35. Ms. Pac-Man (arcade / Atari 2600 / Apple II)
    36. Spy Hunter (arcade)
    37. Wizard of Wor (arcade / Atari 2600 / Atari 5200)
    38. Space Harrier (arcade / Commodore 64)
    39. Asteroids (arcade / Atari 2600) / Maelstrom (Mac)
    40. Mortal Kombat (arcade / Sega Genesis)
    41. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)
    42. Ridge Racer (arcade / PlayStation)
    43. The Oregon Trail (Apple II)
    44. Star Wars (arcade)
    45. The Beatles: Rock Band (Xbox 360)
    46. Donkey Kong (arcade / Atari 2600 / ColecoVision / Commodore 64)
    47. California Games (Apple II / Atari 2600 / Atari Lynx)
    48. Pitfall! (Atari 2600)
    49. Croc (PlayStation)
    50. Missile Command (arcade / Atari 2600)

If any titles or systems seem particularly missing, in the late '80s I was very pro-Atari and anti-Nintendo. I thought Nintendo was unfairly strong-arming their way into the video game market and not giving competitors like Atari and Sega a fair shake. It wasn't until later that I learned two things: 1, Atari's and Sega's failures were as much their own fault as anybody else's, especially in Atari's case; and 2, the NES really did have some great games. Perhaps if I had begged for an NES for Christmas that year instead of an Atari 7800, there would be a lot more Nintendo titles in this list. But I didn't, and so even now I'm biased toward the games I actually did grow up with.

Totally forgot Perfect Dark on the N64. Way ahead of it's time.

I couldn't remember the name of the games (just looked it up) but Intellivision had a voice module add-on that you plugged on the side of the console and the games B-17 and Bomb Squad were among my favorites of all time too.

Many an hour was spent playing Intellivision baseball against myself. One controller in each hand. I was pretty dang good...never lost a game.
