Maybe they will let you send them your Wii and your Wii U and have them transfer the licenses from one to another. After that, you could no longer play the DLC on your Wii, but it would all be on your new system.

    It's a theory.

Or they could do it the same exact way they've done it with the DSi/3DS.

But I guess we're all determined to ignore that, judging by the OP's question still being asked.

I read up on that situation, and it does indeed seem to be very relevant. If you bought DLC for your DSi, you were not able to transfer it to a new version of the device. No way. Never. And then they "unambiguously" said you wouldn't be able to transfer it to the forthcoming 3DS. But then, at some point, they changed their minds on that, and people were able to transfer their DLC. So, as long as the technology exists for them to make sure that the same person that bought it the Wii DLC in the first place is transferring it to one and only one Wii U, they might actually do that. Though maybe only if the Wii U sells really poorly at first (like the 3DS) and they start flailing for ways to convince people to upgrade. It'll be a business decision. I think it would be really dangerous for anyone to assume that they will allow DLC transfer to happen, "for sure".

...If the technology exists? Are you purposely trying to overcomplicate things?

Plug in Wii. Plug in WiiU. Download Transfer App on Wii. Tell it to search for the WiiU's signal. Switch to WiiU display. Accept transfer.

    Alternatively...

Plug in Wii. Download Transfer App on Wii. Tell it the name/information of the WiiU profile you wish to associate the DLC with in the future. Go on WiiU and reacquire downloads/plug in your SD card and have everything work fine.

Comments like this suggest to me that it's not technologically possible for Nintendo to allow for DLC transfers from the Wii. Maybe it really wouldn't be any more difficult than what they did for the transfers from the DSi. I don't know. But I DO know that the PS3 (and Xbox 360?) already seem to be set up in a way that makes it much easier to buy a new machine, set it as your new main device, and transfer all of your previous DLC over to it, smoothly, for free.

With the Wii, you have to send in your old one and have them do it. Suggesting to me that their anti-piracy features make it difficult to have the DLC transferred smoothly by the consumer. Swapping an SD card won't work from Wii to Wii. Do they have any method that will allow people to swap an SD card from their Wii to a Wii U, in a way that will keep the consumer from giving that same SD card to all of their friends, or from uploading the data to a file share site? I don't know how difficult that will be for Nintendo to set up something like that. But I'm always told by the programmers here that seemingly simple solutions are actually closer to impossible (like, for instance, giving a discount for RB3 versions to people that already bought the legacy version. Seems like it should be simple. But it is, in fact, impossible).

Do I know this for sure? No, I do not. But I would be stunned if the transfer of all Wii DLC to the Wii U goes smoothly and easily, just for business reasons. But also, I would not be stunned if it turns out to be a difficult problem for them to overcome, technologically speaking.

Except where they've said it transfers.

I just said this two posts ago, why does everyone ignore what Nintendo does when discussing what Nintendo can do? They show they can and will transfer DLC, we sit and debate if they'll transfer DLC, they TELL US they're transferring DLC, we have people asking if they CAN do it?

Wii U will be backwards compatible with Wii games. That's not the same as having DLC transfer over. Where does it say that DLC will transfer over?? Where??

... Oh, there, in another thread in a different message board, under "LESS ROKK MORE TALK". With a link to the article in IGN that confirm this. Well, OK then, now I know. So rockman05 has not read this article? Or he's just thinking that Rock Band DLC will be handled differently because it isn't mentioned specifically and he's worried that something will go wrong? Yeah, that happens. But, in general, it certainly seems to be "technologically possible". Good to know.

If DLC transfers, Rock Band DLC will transfer. Before anyone brings up licensing again, licensed content hasn't affected backwards compatibility on any other console.

The way I see it, unless Nintendo or Harmonix personally announce RB specific DLC can be transferred to the Wii U, then I will continue to be a skeptic.
