Talking Heads - Remain in Light: A collaborative first impression.

Starring: STM, MMB, and newcomer Gowi

    [11:02:43 PM] Justin Preston: Well
    [11:02:53 PM] Blake Smith: 3
    [11:02:57 PM] Blake Smith: 2
    [11:03:00 PM] Blake Smith: 1
    [11:03:03 PM] Blake Smith: Go
[11:03:20 PM] Justin Preston: Born Under Punches
[11:03:37 PM] Blake Smith: jumps right into it
[11:04:15 PM] Blake Smith: i think this is witts favorite
[11:04:19 PM] Justin Preston: I'm loving the bass
[11:04:51 PM] Blake Smith: i do love his voice
[11:05:03 PM] Justin Preston: It's so strange I love it
[11:05:15 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: yeah, I always liked the poppy, almost funk aestetic of the bass here
[11:06:12 PM] Blake Smith: random sound effects
[11:06:24 PM] Justin Preston: Awesome random sound effects
[11:06:33 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: define random
[11:06:42 PM] Justin Preston: Out of place
[11:06:57 PM] Justin Preston: Came out of nowhere
[11:06:57 PM] Blake Smith: nothing is out of place in this song
[11:07:19 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: my sentiment exactly
[11:08:03 PM] Blake Smith: the one thing i have trouble with sometimes is the repetitiveness
[11:08:30 PM] Justin Preston: Yeah it is a bit repetitive
[11:08:41 PM] Blake Smith: same with once in a lifetime
[11:08:57 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: new wave is hardly unrepetetive
[11:09:03 PM] Justin Preston: Crosseyed and Painless
[11:09:27 PM] Justin Preston: My least favorite of the pack RB got
[11:09:36 PM] Justin Preston: But still a cool song
[11:09:46 PM] Blake Smith: i should get that pack
[11:10:09 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: I probablly should, but I'm so disinterested in playing now.
[11:10:36 PM] Justin Preston: You guys disappoint me
[11:10:49 PM] Blake Smith: join the club
[11:10:55 PM] Justin Preston: You should both have gotten it the week it came out!

[11:14:02 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: I love the guitar on this piece.
[11:14:33 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: Something about jangly funk-inspired rhytyms for me

[11:20:24 PM] Blake Smith: now the one i've heard many times
[11:20:53 PM] Justin Preston: The intro always reminds me of one of the songs from Lucy the Daughter of the Devil
    [11:21:07 PM] Michael Gowienczyk: lol
[11:21:29 PM] Justin Preston: And you can pound my tomtom
[11:22:25 PM] Justin Preston: I love that echo

It's a special Rock Band edition first impression. Me only this time.

    London Calling First Impressions

    London Calling:
One of the two songs I know on the album. Fun little guitar song.

    Brand New Cadillac:
Great guitar and cool sounding bass. I really enjoyed this track on guitar.

    Jimmy Jazz:
I really really liked that one. The guitar sounded fantastic and I loved the sax. Looking forward to playing the keys on that.

    Hateful:
Fun high energy track. Alt strummy but not in a bad way. It was okay.

    Rudie Can't Fail:
Alt stummy in a bad way but there wasn't too much of it. This song sounded very similar to I Fought The Law. In fact while I was playing it my brother walked through the room and started singing it thinking that was the song I was playing.

    Spanish Bombs:
Keys and drums sounded like the highlight of this track. The guitar was fun but I'm looking forward to trying those keys. The song itself was cool but I need to take a look at some of these lyrics in these songs. I have a hard time understanding what they are saying.

    The Right Profile:
Nothing about this song seems to fit. It sounds like bits from other songs jammed together. Drums sound fun though.

    Lost in the Supermarket:
The other song I already know on this album. I love this song. But I do think the Ben Folds cover is better. That opening guitar riff sounds so much better on horns.

    Clampdown:
I did not care for that spoken word intro. it sounded like his mouth was too close to the mic or something. I couldn't really understand him. After that though the song was great. Sounded like it would be real fun on keys. I look forward to it.

    The Guns of Brixton:
The guitar sounds sick, and I don't mean that in a good way. It literally sounded like the guitar was gonna throw up. Also the chorus sounded like it didn't fit. Like they were speeding through saying "the guns of Brixton". If that makes sense.

    Wrong 'Em Boyo:
From the intro I was ready to say ugh and put this below London Calling but I quickly fell in love with it after the intro ended. Those keys sound fantastic. It really has that ska punk vibe that was big in the 90s. What a fun song.

    Death or Glory:
Cool fun guitar. Not much to say. Sounds like a fun track to sing along to.

    Koka Kola:
Really fun track, I really enjoyed that one.

    The Card Cheat:
You know I love me song piano heavy songs . The piano sounds great and I wants to play that! However I couldn't understand a word he was singing.

    Lover's Rock:
Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this one. It sounded great but it didn't sound like a Clash song. Just not something I would expect from them.

    Four Horsemen:
Not much to say. It was okay.

    I'm Not down:
This one seems to be all over (in a good way ). Fun song.

    Revolution Rock:
The lyrics that I understood seemed a bit cheesy, but who doesn't love cheese? The drums on this song sound like a freaking blast. Makes me wish my drums weren't broken .

All in all it's a great album. Ilk give it an 8/10. Really glad I finally picked it up. And I know I'm missing a song. I plan on picking it up soon to complete the album.

Here are the song rankings. Not sure if they are where I would put them upon listening again but everything above Brand New Cadillac and below Four Horsemen is correct.

Honestly Lost in the Supermarket isn't one of my favorites on the album. However, Wrong 'Em Boyo and Jimmy Jazz are also two of my absolute favorites.

Now I need a keys playthrough because like you said you may appreciate some of these more on keys.

My list goes like this for a purely musical standpoint.

    I'm Not Down
    Death or Glory
    Wrong 'Em Boyo
    Rudie Can't Fail
    Jimmy Jazz

    The Right Profile
    Koka Kola
    Brand New Cadillac
    The Guns of Brixton
    London Calling

    Clampdown
    Lost in the Supermarket
    Four Horsemen
    Spanish Bombs
    Hateful

    The Card Cheat
    Revolution Rock
    Lover's Rock

Oh also I know that your drums are broken but if they ever get fixed Four Horsemen is great on drums.

From my list London Calling is the start of yellow and there are no red. And in between Brand New Cadillac and Four Horsemen is all in a mixed up order I think. It's hard to keep track of 18 (16) songs you're hearing for the first time.

I'll play through on keys and let you know what I think.

I don't dislike the red ones but I just don't listen to them as often as the others.

    Chris Keough 9:03 PM
    A very synth heavy song
    Justin Preston 9:03 PM
Is this that Dubstep everyone hates?
    Blake Smith 9:03 PM
    haha
    Justin Preston 9:03 PM
    Y'all Ready For This!
    Chris Keough 9:03 PM
get ready for a lot of repetitiveness lol
    Blake Smith 9:04 PM
6 foot 3 from North Carolina!
    Justin Preston 9:04 PM
    Nice pianoy
    Chris Keough 9:05 PM
    a very abrupt ending
    Blake Smith 9:05 PM
    i see that
    Justin Preston 9:05 PM
    Stellar Evolution
    9:05 PM
Sounds like the starting song of a weird puzzle game
    Chris Keough 9:06 PM
Yeah I thought it sounded like that or for some kind of racing game
    9:06 PM
    like arcade racing
    Blake Smith 9:06 PM
are you playing any of these parts?
    Chris Keough 9:06 PM
    Hmm?
    Blake Smith 9:06 PM
well you know sometimes you play guitar and stuff
    Justin Preston 9:06 PM
    Like with real instruments?
    Chris Keough 9:07 PM
This is all through MIDI, this song.
    9:07 PM
but the album there is guitar
    Blake Smith 9:07 PM
    ok
    Justin Preston 9:08 PM
    This song has stellar evolution
    9:08 PM
    Sarsaparilla
    Blake Smith 9:08 PM
    old west player piano
    Justin Preston 9:08 PM
Okay I already really like this one
    Chris Keough 9:08 PM
Yes! That was the vibe I was trying to get
    9:08 PM
    Old west meets future synth
    Blake Smith 9:08 PM
    that's what i got immediately
    Justin Preston 9:09 PM
    Yup
    9:09 PM
    Well done
    Chris Keough 9:09 PM
Made this one in a day, one of my favs
    9:09 PM
Synth solo was live recorded through a midi keyboard by me
    Justin Preston 9:09 PM
Sound like it could be from a Sonic game
    Blake Smith 9:10 PM
    very cool
    Chris Keough 9:10 PM
It's wonder how well the Rock Band 3 keyboard works as a real instrument
    Blake Smith 9:10 PM
    ha yeah
    Justin Preston 9:11 PM
    Very danceable
    9:11 PM
    Ultimatum
    Chris Keough 9:11 PM
My attempt at a kind of pop-synth sound
    Justin Preston 9:12 PM
    Or else!
    Chris Keough 9:12 PM
You'll find that I just try to find cool words as song titles
    Justin Preston 9:12 PM
Yeah I could picture a pop song using this
    Chris Keough 9:12 PM
Well yeah, it's pretty repetitive like a pop song
    Blake Smith 9:13 PM
i wondered how you titled things
    Justin Preston 9:13 PM
    Most are Cipher jokes
    Chris Keough 9:13 PM
Well, things like "Sarsaparilla" really fit the mood of the song
    Blake Smith 9:13 PM
    well yeah
    Chris Keough 9:13 PM
Spelling it was the real problem
    Blake Smith 9:13 PM
    haha
    9:14 PM
at first i thought you had it wrong to be honest
    Chris Keough 9:14 PM
It's not spelled like how it sounds at all!
    Blake Smith 9:14 PM
yeah i had to google it
    9:14 PM
    twice
    Chris Keough 9:14 PM
    hahaha
    Justin Preston 9:14 PM
    Juxtaposition
    9:14 PM
    Cipher joke
    Chris Keough 9:14 PM
    Cipher joke right there hahaha
    Blake Smith 9:15 PM
that was a good drum break
    Justin Preston 9:15 PM
    Ha
    Chris Keough 9:15 PM
    Yeah those were drum loops
    9:15 PM
    Royalty free, of course
    9:15 PM
This is one of my favorite sounding synths
    Blake Smith 9:16 PM
    deep
    9:16 PM
how do you choose the order of the album?
    Chris Keough 9:17 PM
Eh, someof them are just when they were uploaded, and some I moved around for them to fit well.
    Justin Preston 9:17 PM
Rise of the Moderator (8-bit Revolution)
    Chris Keough 9:17 PM
Its a theme of mine to put short songs on every album.
    Justin Preston 9:17 PM
    Short
    9:17 PM
Reminds me of the Jaws song
    Chris Keough 9:17 PM
Inspired by the double banning of 2012
    Justin Preston 9:17 PM
(Cooler Than) The Other Side of the Pillow
    9:18 PM
    Bass attack
    Chris Keough 9:18 PM
    Another synth recorded by me
    9:18 PM
it's a Clavinet actually, like in Jungle Boogie.
    Justin Preston 9:18 PM
This song really reminds me of TLC's Waterfalls
    Chris Keough 9:18 PM
    really?
    9:19 PM
    Never got that vibe.
    Justin Preston 9:19 PM
    Listen to Waterfalls again
    9:19 PM
    Snazzy
    9:19 PM
    Did we lose STM?
    Chris Keough 9:19 PM
I can get where you're coming fom for Waterfalls, I just never noticed it.
    9:19 PM
    i don't know
    9:19 PM
    yup.
    Justin Preston 9:19 PM
Yeah his internet has been doing that
    9:20 PM
    This song is really cool.
    Chris Keough 9:20 PM
Well the show must go on.
    9:20 PM
    One might say it's... Snazzy?
    Justin Preston 9:20 PM
I think I listened to it before
    9:20 PM
    Perfect name!
    9:20 PM
    Real guitar?
    Chris Keough 9:20 PM
Really drifts away from the electronic sound of the album.
    9:21 PM
    Yes, real guitar.
    Justin Preston 9:21 PM
It reminds me of these animated thingys I saw once
    Chris Keough 9:21 PM
Weird how things work out, the bass line was recorded first for this. And I had a guitar riff that I had written a while ago, and it actually fit perfectly with the bass line.
    9:22 PM
    ah STM's back.
    Justin Preston 9:22 PM
    Highlighting the piano
    Blake Smith 9:17 PM
    well that was fun
    Chris Keough 9:22 PM
    Heh.
    9:23 PM
You wanna join in from where we are?
    Justin Preston 9:23 PM
I have to see if I can find those animated orchestra thingys so I can show you
    Blake Smith 9:23 PM
    and back
    Chris Keough 9:23 PM
    Alright sounds cool
    Justin Preston 9:23 PM
    Breakout
    Blake Smith 9:23 PM
yes and obviously that one is amazingly awesome
    Justin Preston 9:23 PM
    Vocals... sorta
    Chris Keough 9:24 PM
    Rap removed.
    9:24 PM
    That's in the single version.
    9:24 PM
    Too fly for the album.
    Justin Preston 9:24 PM
    Aw
    Blake Smith 9:24 PM
    yeah aw
    9:24 PM
i wanted to get jiggy with it as the kids say
    Chris Keough 9:24 PM
    ha
    Justin Preston 9:25 PM
    My booty is shakin'
    Chris Keough 9:25 PM
But yeah this song can get kinda long without the vocals occupying it
    Blake Smith 9:25 PM
so this whole part has vocals usually?
    Chris Keough 9:25 PM
Yeah like 3/5 of the song
    Justin Preston 9:26 PM
    Shouldn't have removed them
    Blake Smith 9:26 PM
    why did you remove it?
    Chris Keough 9:26 PM
There's another version by itself on my website with the vocals.
    9:26 PM
Because. Too fly for this album.
    9:26 PM
    haha
    Justin Preston 9:26 PM
This should be the bonus one and that should be the album one
    Chris Keough 9:27 PM
I got sick of hearing my own voice, really heh
    Blake Smith 9:27 PM
    i feel that
    Justin Preston 9:27 PM
    Whoa guitar solo
    9:27 PM
    Out of nowhere
    Chris Keough 9:27 PM
Yeah, supposed to be after the last chorus, but theres no choruses
    Justin Preston 9:27 PM
    Kick ass solo
    Blake Smith 9:27 PM
    mhm
    Chris Keough 9:28 PM
Feel free to listen to the other version when you get the chance
    Justin Preston 9:28 PM
    Sunrise/Sunset
    Chris Keough 9:28 PM
You'll thank me for not including it
    9:28 PM
Yes this is the last song I did.
    Blake Smith 9:29 PM
    here comes the sun
    Justin Preston 9:29 PM
    Starting real slow
    Blake Smith 9:29 PM
    do do do do
    Chris Keough 9:29 PM
    haha
    9:29 PM
    dem synths
    Justin Preston 9:29 PM
It sounds like a farewell song
    Chris Keough 9:30 PM
    Great album closer
    Blake Smith 9:30 PM
    true dat
    Chris Keough 9:30 PM
The drums are actually my favorite part
    9:32 PM
    Ending on a high note.
    Justin Preston 9:32 PM
    This part sounds church organy
    Chris Keough 9:32 PM
Not...literally... but you know what I mean
    9:32 PM
    It's an organ alright.
    9:33 PM
    And that's it.
    Justin Preston 9:33 PM
    Penis joke
    Chris Keough 9:33 PM
    We good?
    9:33 PM
    Favorites?
    Justin Preston 9:33 PM
    STM? You still there?
    Chris Keough 9:33 PM
    says he's offline
    Justin Preston 9:33 PM
Favorites for me were Sarsaparilla and Snazzy
    9:34 PM
    Nothing else really stuck out
    Chris Keough 9:34 PM
    Sarsaparilla and Sunrise/Sunset for me.
    9:34 PM
Just a fun old timey dance tune.
    9:35 PM
    With a modern twist.
    Justin Preston 9:35 PM
    What a twist!
    Chris Keough 9:35 PM
    Reaganomics!
