Thread: Ion double hits

    Ion double hits

I just purchased the Ion Drum Rocker for Xbox 360 and for the most part I am enjoying them. I started playing them on carpet and noticed there was alot of static on the pads and there would be quite a few double hits during play. I recently moved them to a linoleum floor in hopes of reducing static and double hits. I'm still getting a few double hits..has anyone had this problem? I don't use the cymbals so I'm assuming it's in the pads.

my first question to you is are you referring to the cymbals or the drum pads?
Best use of a new word: "That's what happens when you are enawesomifying things for optimum rad. Or whatever." Quoted from HMXSean

What, was it too long to bother reading the whole thing?
Yeah, static electricity building up on the pads and then discharging can cause unwanted "hits" on an ION kit. A lot of times, what I do while a song is loading up is just run my hands across all rubber surfaces on my IONs. I can feel the static on them. This discharges them before starting a new song and I never get double hits after doing it.

I remember once, I had my IONs hooked up to my XBox, I was on the other side of the room doing something. Something gave me a static shock and the ION kits detected it as a green pad hit, from the other side of the room. I think I literally laughed my ass off.

This sounds like a typical static electricity issue that all ION's have. You can get an anti-static mat to put under your kit, but those are a bit pricey especially if you need a decent sized one to fit under your entire kit, so any rubber mat would do fine. I took my welcome mat outside my door to put under my kit and it works pretty good oddly enough.

I had ION drums for more than 2 years and always used them on carpet. I never had any pad problems at all. I've honestly never even heard of the concept of static setting a drum off. Plus the drum kit has rubber feet on every contact point with the floor unless you never put them on.

But for the ION cymbals I did have a lot of double hitting problems. I had to switch them out for the cymbals of an older electric drum kit that I had and that worked perfect.

The ION cymbals are notorious for doing this. I found out that tightening the screws on the bottom of the things fixes that "buzzing" when you hit them, which is what's setting off double hits in the first place.

I had IONs since release until the end of rockband 2's era so there wasn't really much need for the cymbals competitively because there was no Pro Mode. I basically only used them when rocking out for enjoyment in quickplay where the double hits didn't both me as much when they did occur lol.

After getting frustrated for a while I made it a habit to rub the pads after each song to no avail. I just put a small rubber pad under the foot pedal yesterday and am still getting quite a few double hits. I'm torn between buying a full rubber mat and if that doesn't work I may just go crazy haha.

Like I said in my above post, I have a small rubber pad that's only under the foot pedal. I'm not sure why there would need to be one under the whole set due to it already having rubber at the end of the legs. Short of returning them I'm not sure how to fix the problem.

Go into the freestyle mode and one by one just test all the pads with your stick at different velocities and see if it ever causes a double hit. It's a possibility that you may just have an over sensitive pad.

Hitting a pad really hard can cause the vibration to set off another drum pad/cymbal. Make sure the plastic of any two drum pads aren't touching each other.

I completely wore my ION kit out. after playing them for so long the rubber pad begins to stretch and make a huge bubble in the middle. I had to undo the screws and let the rubber flatten back out against itself for every pad more times than i can remember.

I've beaten those pads to the point they became completely unresponsive and i had to replace them with other drum pads from a previous electronic drum kit, all four of them.(exact same model without the rubber surface and colored ring) The surface of those pads were like a plastic layer and awfully loud so i unscrewed it and placed the ion rubber surface onto them. They worked great and many FC's were had.

I wore those rubber pads out so bad that when you rubbed it with your hands, the rubber started coming off until eventually i wore all the way through it.

tl;dr test your pads thoroughly and I'm the guy who drummed a hole through ions.

It doesn't seem to me like sensitivity is the problem, no pads are touching each other. But I did go into freestyle mode and played for a little bit, and when I rubbed my hand over the yellow pad it set of itself along with the red and blue pad..so I'm almost positive it's a static issue. The problem is I don't know how to get rid of it.
