Why no Pink Floyd? no (classic) GN'R? no Eagles? :(

It confuses me that an abundance of Jimi made it into the series (which is friggin AWESOME btw), but no Walls made of Brick or any Comfortably Numb-ness, no Sweet Child or Paradise City, no Californian Hotels or Long Runs. Did these bands (and respective tracks) NOT contribute heavily to DEFINING Rock?

If I had to take a guess, it would be as follows.

1) Pink Floyd - To quote one of their own songs, Money.
2) GnR - The pissy fued between Axl and Slash over who owns the material.
3) Eagles - Something to do with once being exclusive to Guitar Hero.

Licensing issues with all of them.
HMX said that financial reasons aren't a factor when it comes to the "obvious" picks that aren't in Rock Band already, it's just that there's something keeping them from getting in.

I wouldn't hold your breath for any of them, sorry :/

If you're still curious or want more answers, I am sure there are plenty of threads about all the bands you mentioned, just do a search. You probably could have gotten the answer without starting a whole new thread.

Harmonix don't necessarily decide who they want in games. Its nothing to do with whats popular and whats not as such. They ask us for direction by providing a request form for us, then once there is a large enough demand and the same artists/songs keep cropping up; they contact the respective band/label for an agreement to be reached. If either party is not interested, there isn't a lot that can be done. Of course one day they might have a change of heart but don't count on it.

Some bands don't want to be associated with music games, or distribute their separated masters. See "Led Zeppelin". The game needs separated masters to work properly. If they only used a mixed file which is a "CD ready" format then if a player misses a note, either the whole song continues playing OR the whole music file "mutes".

Some bands are actually signed up with exclusive contracts to other game developers. Most likely other music games, but it can be any game. I've made a small list of bands which are known/most likely to be tied with other music games:

Aerosmith
Alice Cooper
Bruce Springsteen
Eagles
Eric Clapton
Metallica
Michael Jackson
Van Halen

There are likely to be hundreds of others but this are probably the main ones.

Another problem is money. There is a HUGE license fee to license songs or bands for use in game. Probably 1000s of dollars to license just ONE song. And don't think that re-producing songs is free either. These still needs to be licensed (although it probably costs around half in comparison).

Alice Cooper and Bruce Springsteen are not exclusive. Bruce had two songs release to GHWT in honor of him playing at the Superbowl that year, and Alice did a re-record for GHWoR.
