I'm not a Gold Starry person, but it stands to reason that gold starring is, to some extent, path optimization (i.e. figuring out what is the best way to do "X"). Wouldn't you have optimized your path, be it from pure familiarity or recognition of what powerups would be helpful at what stages down the line, if you completed the song instead of cutting out early just because you knew your run wouldn't GS it?

It seems like you wouldn't have needed to invest 30 runs worth of coins to GS the song that way...

I live in Central. Plus, I have a job where I regularly can't act on the things I want to say, so I can show restraint.

Well it's entirely reasonable somebody might have a path planned out and simply mess up. It might be something in their control (Losing Blitz mode because of a bad call in swapping tracks) or it might be something outside of their control (A flame note going on the wrong track). Either way, there's reasonable reasons somebody might want to restart, especially if you're going beyond gold stars and wanting to compete leaderboard wise.

The solution to play the song the whole way through just again asserts that the coins are overcome through spending time on the game, not through anything of skill, and that it completely puts a very sharp thorn in the side of anybody with a perfectionist style of play.

I've found that, most of the time, it helps to actually be using the power-ups when trying to optimize your path...

A prime example of why being punished for restarting early on is Diamond Eyes. If you screw that up in the first phrase you pretty much have zero chance of gold starring the song. I just quit now out of frustration. Didn't want to play through another 4 minutes of it for the 5th consecutive time. You are also very dependent on having Blast Note powerups in specific lanes too.

That wasn't what was being discussed. The statement was a response to the thought of quitting early, not of having a full load.

I'm aware of that. I was just saying that it's necessary to use coins to even practice a song. You can't know where the overdrive or purple notes are without using those power-ups.

Purple notes are supposedly at least semi-random. And you can run through a song with just an OD power-up to get an idea of where they OD is, and if you get 5*, you'd only lose 50 on an easy song, gain 75 on a medium song, and gain 200 on a hard song. Of course, none of that is going to change the opinion of the people never want to do anything but full layout.

In other coin economy related news, they just said on Twitter that they're giving away double points for any Linkin Park played this week (and you still get the regular double coins for playing new songs, so if you play any unplayed Linkin Park you get triple points).

To me, things like this is why I like the coin economy. And it starts to show the simple things they can do to tweak it (even without a patch).
