You don't actually have to hold a whole sustained note for it to "count" towards your next multiplier.

If I've got a track that's just a series of long sustained notes next to a track with more dense notes (i.e. a keyboard track with just long sustains next to a chatty vocal track), I'll mainly stay on the vocal track, occasionally popping over to the keys track to hit the initial note in a sustain.
