Yeah, I'd definitely recommend Blast Notes generally over Flame Notes unless you're really good at the game (in which case you probably wouldn't be having trouble with it in the first place.) You have to have Jackpot running while you're chasing Flame Notes in order to make the payoff worthwhile, and it can be frustratingly easy to get flustered and break combo when you have to quickly switch lanes. Plus, Blast Notes make it much easier to keep all of the multipliers up, letting you focus on your Super. It can sometimes be tough to keep the multipliers up with Flame Notes unless you're really comfortable with the song, especially since you have to be willing to abandon a lane any time you see a Flame Note appear.
Looking back at Facebook, I only played this song once with powerups and I would have been using Road Rage/Blast Notes/Super Guitar, and it looks like I barely squeaked out the Gold Star. I haven't played it since. I suspect switching Road Rage for Jackpot like Zage suggested would be a lock.
