Does it matter? After the last checkpoint, is it still better for me to try and keep all the tracks at the same level or can I just stick to whatever has the most notes for more points?

There is no "e" in ridiculous, and "a lot" is TWO words.
And how do I identify which checkpoint is the last?

By knowing the song, or playing through it multiple times.
Witticus: "GeeNef speaks to me like schizophrenia, his words touch me where my priest could reach."
Ack. Okay, thanks.

Sometimes (most of the time?), you can even see the end of the track at the checkpoint if the final section isn't super long.
AsianSteev: if you can read this, put more Ska songs on the RBN! Please?

Yeah, stick to your super instrument for the most part unless it has no notes. Sustains are worth a lot of points, so don't discount them because there's not a lot of notes. If you don't raise any other multiplier, you're only costing yourself at most 1200 points (300 * 4 other lanes).
Some songs it's hard to know if you're on the last gate or not, even if you know the song. Practice helps, though not maxing out the second to last gate may not be that big of an issue.
