Converting ION kit to electronic kit

Back in September I bought an ION Drum Rocker, and I gotta say, money well spent. Since switching from Wii to PS3 and getting an ION kit, I've played Rock Band more these past few months than the past few years. Anyways...

The reason I bought the ION kit was because I wanted a cheap electronic drum kit for when I move out next year since I won't be able to bring my acoustic kit. This is where I'm at right now:

    ION Drum Rocker Core
3 Pintech Cymbal package from RBP
    Yamaha KP-65 and KickWire

Now I realize I need a drum brain, but I'm not really sure which drum brain I should be looking for. I did a bit of googling, and what I found was the Alesis DM5 module. All I will be using this kit for is for practice, so I don't need anything fancy, but I want one that will also work with the MIDI Pro Adapter. Also, I was reading on Docs RB Mods that only certain brains support open/closed HiHat, so I would sort of want that as well.

TL;DR - Best drum brain for ION kit that works well with MIDI Pro Adapter and supports open/closed hi hat

There might be a cheaper option and apologies if this is outside your budget, but I've found the Roland TD-9 brain to be great for Rock Band (supports open/closed hi-hat) and general messing around on the kit. You can adjust the settings for each pad (sensitivity / threshold etc.) so regardless of what pads you use, you should be able to find settings that avoid double-hits / missed hits / crosstalk.

Now if you really have money to burn, a full TD-9 kit is even better . On a serious note, I'm not sure if there is a way to get the frame without the rest of the kit, but one problem I used to have with the Ion kit, was double-hits, because of the weight of the stuff I added to it. I also had the frame just spontaneously fall apart a couple times (and it wasn't just me, other people ran into this too). The TD-9 frame is rock solid, and can handle the weight of everything I put on it.

Ooof, TD-9 is a little over my budget :P If I had the money I would have bought a Roland kit (I've played a few at my local music store and they're awesome). The reason I bought the ION kit was because it was so cheap, and I really don't need anything fancy (I'd rather spend money on my acoustic kit).

I don't really want to have to spend anymore than $500 on a brain to be honest...I want to save as much money as possible for when I move out, so I have to keep a tight budget for this drum kit unfortunately :\

Do you need sounds or is this just for Rock Band?

The Alesis Trigger I/O is a good choice on the cheap if you don't need built in sounds.

This seems like a great option actually. I have Garageband with the rhythm section jam pack that has a bunch of drum kits, so I can just use the Trigger I/O with that?
