I think he is talking about the PS3 usb ports themselves requiring power from the console and not an external hub running from the ps3. Is there anyway to check this without having anything plugged in to the usb ports? As far as i know if you remove the mic the game pauses.

What about games like singstar and rocksmith don't they need things plugged into the usb to operate and do they have problems with crashing?

As many people mentionned before in the old XMB crash thread, people doesn't appear to crash if they aren't connected to the PSN and/or RCS. Many of us thinks the crash is related to the connection to the servers rather than the hardware of the PS3.

Also, the console was made to use USB, 5 volts per port is dedicated, so no worries there.

Yeah, I've had probably over 100 crashes while connected to PSN/RCS, and not a single one when not. It definitely has something to do with the server/client negotiations. No doubt about it.

Got another one last night when scrolling down my song list, it paused for 2-3 seconds then dropped back to xmb.

    I have narrowed it down!

    Hello Folks,

I know HMX will not likely revisit this now that RB3 is at EOL..... but I am 100% certain of what causes the XMB crash.

It is 100% related to the manner in which you SORT SONGS.

If you sort songs by any method that involves your SCORES, you will shortly XMB crash at the start of a song. This includes sorting by Stars or Rank. The more frequently you bob in and out of the Leaderboard (triangle) option, the sooner it will happen, but it WILL happen even if you don't ever visit the leaderboard.

If you sort by non-score-related items (Artist, Difficulty, Song Name), you are unlikely to crash.

Documentation: I've been chasing Guitar Gold Stars now that I've mastered guitar. (670 so far and counting!) To do so, I would sort by song difficulty and just play 'em in order. I can go DAYS without an XMB crash in this manner.

Now, I am known to toss back an adult beverage or two while playing, so those I play closer to 1 am aren't my BEST efforts. Eventually, when I complete all songs of a difficulty, I revisit the list of songs I didn't Gold Star. I sort the list by Stars.... and BOOM, after weeks of never experiencing a crash, I get them every 4th or 5th song (when bobbing in and out of the leaderboard to see how much headroom I have to improve).

    This is HIGHLY repeatable.

I own all 2897 songs for the PS3, so it *may* be a function of "the more songs you have the faster you will crash". But it is a certainty that you WILL crash when sorting by a scoring-based sort order, and that you won't when sorting on methods that don't involve the scores.

Filtering also seems to bring it on. If I filter songs so that I only see songs that have keys.... I'm going to crash. (But this is again likely related to sorting and managing the internal list of what's to be displayed in the song list, in what order).

That's the crux of it. HMX can hopefully easily reproduce it by loading up a boatload of DLC, with lots of saved scores (thousands -- not sure it will crash if there aren't enough scores to matter), and testing. Let it play through a hundred songs when sorted by difficulty. It will not crash. Then change the sort order to Stars, and watch it die quickly.

Again, I don't expect a fix. I'm just saying that HMX could have looked harder for this, as I'm 100% certain of my findings, and it wasn't that hard to find once I started chasing stars.

Note that my theory above is in accord with the observation that one does not crash when not connected to RB Central. You can't sort on rank, etc, if the ranks aren't available.....

What about the crash I just got, which was in the intro video, even before loading DLC? This is odd, it never happened before, but it just did. Most people thinks its client/server related, but I don't think the way you sort songs is affecting anything. No matter how I sort my songs, I might get XMB'd, I might not, this is purely random as far as I've seen. In my case, it crashes when I browse leaderboards on several songs one after another, and when I browse the setlist while a couple of minutes, it will most likely crash, but I've never seen my song sorting do anything about it. I'm not saying it's not a factor, it could, and as I see it, anything could be a factor, but I really don't think that this is the only factor, and that this factor affects everyone. I really think this is more toward server/client communications.

I personally believe it's 15 little elves inside the ps3 that take delight in messing with us.

seriously, I appreciate your theory ADBjester and this may work well for you, however, I don't think it's the only factor. I don't believe it's ever going to be fixed either. I suspect the only way this is going away is when the a new iteration of playstation comes out including a completely new RB game. Until then, we just deal. Ugh.
    ....dropped my sticks

Rb, 1,2,3 . Lego , AcDc, GD, Metal Pak, Classic Pak, RB Pak Vol 2 Country 1 and 2. TB RB, and a lot of DLC.
