Because it's Pop. You can throw whatever pre-text you wish (pop rock, glam rock, hard rock, acid rock, rockabilly, rap rock.......), that doesn't make it rock.

Rock itself is a vague blanket genre. Many different SUBGENRES of rock exist, including pop-rock. You can have an opinion of what you believe to be rock, but there's a reason all the rock subgenres exist, because there are tons of genre that fall under that category. Yes, it is my opinion, and I stated that outright on several posts.

I'm a bit curious why everyone is so offended by my opinion of what "rock" is. Are you the genre police? I also find it interesting that there is one set of people here arguing with me. And an entirely different set on facebook agreeing with me.

And as I stated in the same post you quoted, I found over 100 references to "....-rock". The term "rock" has come to mean "music". I am very aware that there are different genres of "rock". And just because the song falls into that genre, as identified by someone, doesn't mean that I will like it.

The term "rock" generates a specific image to me, as I'm sure it does each of you. That image is and never will be Elton John. Angus Young, now that's a rocker!

You don't pay much attention to the Rock Band Network releases do you?

I know we released a metric poop ton (yes it was measured) of metal this year, and we're hardly alone.


Strikken, The Dillinger escape Plan, The Minotaur Project, Onslaught, Benighted, War of Ages, Buried in Black, Soma Dark, Ava Inferi, Edenshade, Halcyon Way, My Ruin, Fail Emotions, Saint Vitus, Not Above Evil, Terrorizor, Spires, Cynic, Wolfcrusher, The Burial, ETHS, Oklahoma Caddy Shack, Anarchy Club, Raggedy Angry, Eden's Curse, Devin Townsend, Gnostic, Engel, A Plea for Purging, Mystic Syntax, Solution .45, Powerman 5000, Watain, Atheist, Morbid Angel, Ghost Brigade, Watain, Prototype, and Nevermore.

Most of these artists had multiple tracks released.

So if you think there's been no metal released in 2012...you just aren't looking very hard.

Come now, you know RBN doesn't count.
That metal isn't good enough.

Perhaps we should not call it rock and perhaps start calling it Jazz or blues as most rock evolved from Jazz and Blues. I'm not intending to start a discussion on the evolution of rock though.

Andrew WK uses a Piano, Elton John uses a piano - they are brothers from a different mother.

I think you are looking for something along the lines of Hard Rock with what you are trying to describe LordRaven

I would love to see something from Tonight the stars revolt by Powerman 5000 on RBN though. Some big bands there, just not their biggest songs which is a shame.
