I heard the iPhone 5 costs only $168 to make. They sold it at $700. I understand wanting to make a profit, but $500 per person?!?!?

I hadn't heard numbers that low... not to mention they're all a bit of a crap shoot since Apple sources some parts from multiple vendors, and they aren't exactly forthcoming on the yields on the manufacturing of their processors.

Even still, the markup, no matter what, is obscene.

Everyone always brings up Apple when they talk about stuff like this. They arent the only ones. All phone manufactures do almost the same exact thing. As do manufactures of other products.

Very true, although the markup varies sometimes depending on the country. (Case in point - what Samsung's phones cost unlocked in Asia versus here.) Regardless, scared me out of my wits when I saw what the price of the Galaxy Note 2 was unlocked.

Phones are like crazy cheap if you get them with a contract. I don't know why anyone would buy one without.

My phone cost me $50 and they gave me a $100 gift card for upgrading.

Yeah obviously everyone marks stuff higher to make a profit, but how many of these other companies charge $700 for their phones? The rival phone to the iPhone (Droid) typically has their phones $400 at most.

When the next gen of Android phones come they will probably be similarly priced. 500-600 is usually the price of a brand new off contract non starter Android phone.

Also no android phone that I know of comes with 64gbs included.

With my carrier (T-Mobile), if you buy the phone unlocked or bring in your own unlocked phone, you get a lower monthly bill.

I'm only paying $50 a month for an unlimited plan as a result, whereas my brother (who took a carrier-subsidized phone) pays $70.

What I don't get is the people who buy both an iPod and an iPhone. Aren't they are basically the same thing other than the fact that the iPod can't make phone calls.
