The first one will be a short.

I've been making films for the last 3 years, and I've never had a final video file that big before.

You're missing the point.

I hold a day of shooting with my actors and crew and everybody. The movie itself will only end up being about 8 minutes long, but that day of shooting is a full day of shooting. 9 or 10 or 12 hours on each camera. That's what I need to put into the computer/external HDD.

If you export the final piece in the right codec, you shouldn't have a problem.


It may be a restriction for mac users using portable hard drives that have been partitioned...

Is replacing the hard drive in a laptop a relatively simple thing to do?

Ryan should be able to tell you about the hard drive. I'm not so sure.

My old laptop it was SUPER simple. Two or 3 screws and the HDD just popped right out. My new laptop is a bit more complicated but still pretty easy. I would suggest looking at videos on youtube of taking about the model of laptop you have and that will give you an idea of the complexity level.

I've never been able to load something directly on to an external hard drive, and access it from there for use in a program on the computer itself. That's what would need to happen. I would need to have the video be loaded from the camera directly onto the (external) HDD without it going first onto the computer's HDD (which as I say, I've never been able to do with the 500GB external HDD I have). Once there, my video editing software needs to be able to find it as though it were on the computer itself. And then presumably my disc burning software on this computer (if I cheap out on the new one it may not have a burner).

Am I just a n00b? Is all of that more possible than I think?

Its totally possible. I do it every day of my life. I store all my video files on my external hard drive and load them into my video editing program which is on my internal hard drive.
