If you pull out early you don't have to worry as much about how you raise your child.

I remember working as a student manager for the football team my junior year (and I actually had a hell of a great time doing it, even though I don't really enjoy football). Come the 4th quarter, whenever there was a kicking play (kicking off or punting), you could be sure of the coach yelling out "Get me Stevens!" to allow the gangly, unathletic, slightly ******ed kid his one play. But you know what, that kid came to every practice and was as gung-ho as any member of the team, so you can't fault his love of the game.
I like to bang on windows at my local school and scream, "Good job! I'll have my eye on you!" to build the self-esteem of random children.
They were still doing that at your high school? Definitely was happening at my high school. If that dude loved football thats great but I hope he knew that he wasnt good(assuming thats why he only was in for one play) because the "we celebrate everything" stuff that is all over the place isnt good for anyone.

A little bit of a reductio there, but have you seen a pre-school graduation? The last day, the child receives a computer printed certificate. There are no gowns, music, speeches or ceremony. It's a small recognition that the child is learning something. Children do put some effort into preschool work - childlike though it may be.

Ever since the Sandy Hook thing, my school has decided to put gaurds at some of the doors.
These guards are middle aged women and they basically let anyone in. They're pretty much payed to open a locked door if somebody needs it opened.

Oh I'm sure he knew and couldn't have given less of a ****. As far as he cared, he was on the field wearing his school's colors. I saw him after games a few times talking with his parents (ugh, can you imagine? Coming to your son's games to see him play one play, a kickoff or a punt) and just beaming.
It didn't hurt him, and it didn't really hurt the team either (what's one guy on a kicking play?), so I think it accomplished what it set out to. It's not like he ever would have tried to play at a higher level.
