Americans are in an easy position regarding instruments because of the Madcatz store having virtually everything in stock and 50% off. Non-Americans are in an "impossible to find" situation with most instruments.

I didn't buy any of my instruments. I adapted to video games late, so I didn't get Guitar Hero I, II, or III until 2010, back when I still just had a PS2. All my instruments are from:
-People getting rid of crap from their closets: (GH1 controller, GH2 controller, Ion Drum Rocker)
-Forgetting to return controllers I borrowed but nobody caring: (GH2 Xbox controller, mics)
-Gifts: (P-Bass, MIDI Pro adapter)
