The only thing used is your picture and technically the state owns that, as well as your actual license. It's been this way for probably 15 years at least.

Here's a scenario that's even more messed up. When the DMV trains people on spotting fake I.D.'s they print up fake ones using random photos. The I.D. will have a large void stamp on it so it can't be used but it's still possible your photo has been used in a class as an example of of a counterfeit I.D.
