Guitar contantly shows 'low battery' and shuts off

I've got a new Xbox 360 RB3 fender wireless guitar (Mad Catz) that isn't working right. Even with new batteries (or batteries from my other guitar that works) it shows that it has low battery and the guitar shuts off after about a minute.

Anyone seen this before and have tips?

It shuts off to save battery life if there's been no input for a minute or two, but I've run into an issue with my PS3 Mustang Pro where suddenly the sync/controller number lights will flash rapidly and I'll be unable to do anything until it settles down a few seconds later.
