They know Aerosmith as that one band that dude from American Idol was in. Thats all. You are seriously over estimating their knowledge of the past.

You are seriously underestimating how significant and popular even their past music still is. Andrew WK has one song that some people may know, Aerosmith has many songs the average person has heard.

I am positive that if I ask my sister(who is only a year and some months younger than me and more knowledgeable on past music than your average person her age) that she would not be able to name more than 2 maybe 3 songs from them and that's probably partially because of American Idol.

And how many Andrew WK songs would she be able to name?

No, they know of Steven Tyler as the guy from American Idol. I imagine many people haven't connected him to Aerosmith despite possibly knowing a couple songs. I never knew Randy Jackson was once part of Journey until my mom had told me.

edit: think of it this way. I am 17 and have known of Aerosmith for quite a few years. I had never even heard of Andrew WK until the RB song.

Well that sounds like proof enough. I can't name 1 Andrew WK song and if I ask my wife (who is only 3 years and some months younger than me and more knowledgeable on current music than your average person her age) she wouldn't be able to name 1 by them either (but that's probably because they've never been on American Idol

None because she doesnt internet. Hell I couldnt even name one before it came to Rock Band. Your average pre-teen to teen will not know of Aerosmith like you think they would. They are more likely to know of Andrew W.K. and music similar to his than anything Aerosmith and similar stuff. There is a reason why we havent been getting a lot of stuff similar to Aerosmith because its not as popular as Call Me Maybe and Party Hard. It doesnt sell as well and thats because people dont know Aerosmith as well as you think they do.

You dont even know how many people thought that The Beatles were copying Bieber when Bieber covered one of their songs or how many people have heard a song through Glee and never the original. Bands like Aerosmith are just not as popular now as they once were.

Party Hard came out 12 years ago.

Andrew WK hasn't released a rock album of original material since 2006.

I was actually pretty surprised when I saw the release date. I would have guessed 2008 at the earliest.

It is not even an argument. Aerosmith is an iconic American band. Could a new band like them become popular today? No, probably not. But Aerosmith's songs were so popular and enduring they have become timeless. They had hit songs in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, and, if any of the singles from their new album do well enough, the 10's, too. Andrew WK had *a* song that was a hit in the early aughts ( maybe he technically had more, I don't know). It is a good song but, in his dreams, he could not attain the career height that Aerosmith has.
