There is absolutely no reason to have Rock Band jump the gun on the console without a plan, and it would be illogical to even formulate one without taking the new xbox and steam box into consideration.

Well to be fully technical, they only specifically stated that game purchases from the PSN would not be transferable. With the use of Gaikai to stream games from the PS1-3 generation, there is still a chance that DLC for those games will be able to transfer over. However, there's still a lot of time until the release of the PS4 and a lot of information that will still be coming out.

I, however, will still have my PS3 hooked up for RB and anything else I already have on my PS3.

that, and they also said the PS3 Dualshock won't work on PS4. So that also makes it unclear if the RB instruments would work

Although this is going Off Topic, did you ever consider the amount of people who now work in technology that never used to? The servers need to be designed, built, installed and maintained. The software that runs on them also needs to be designed, built, installed and maintained. How about the all other servers along the internet that the data is transported on? How about the cables that the data flows through? Or the added electricity it uses? How about the customer care networks for your digital purchases? How about all the new indie studios we have now?

    My thoughts on these things:

Zero backwards compatibility on PS4 was extremely boneheaded on Sony's part. I'm shocked no one there thought about having BC be optional by way of an add-in card or a deluxe version of the system that plays PS1-4 but costs $50 more than the SKU that only plays PS4. No BC means they won't be able to cash in on PS2-3 classics like they did with PS1 classics. After all: With BC: just copy n paste. Without BC, they have to re-program before rereleasing.

As for Rock Band, with DLC ending production, Harmonix isn't likely thinking about Rock Band on 8th gen systems right now. However, I feel as a couple other posters in this thread that Harmonix could consider a Rock Band comeback circa 2015-2016. Song licensing may be up in the air, but from a technical standpoint, I think it might be possible to use PS3 Rock Band DLC on a PS4 game, even if there's no BC. Rock Band songs are data objects consisting of digital music, note charts, album art, and various text tags (ex. difficulty, genre, year, artist/song/album identifiers). All it takes to play them is an engine that can read them.

Just keep the PS3 handy and don't rush to dump it just because there's a new system out.

You might have to shuffle between 2 systems from time to time, god forbid.

Don't you realise that that is harder than changing discs for TB:RB?

DL over disc has killed 1000s of jobs already, Think back 10 years ago when every mall had 2 'record' stores. A big city would have 15-20 music stores employing 20 or so each. How many people are working at iTunes now? And the manufacturing jobs at the disc pressing and CD player factories are gone too. If only WiiU has discs, Gamestop would have to go down soon, killing more jobs for teens/20s kids. New tech is a double edged sword that makes life easier only IF you have job...
Technology has also created a lot of jobs. There are a lot of new job categories that didn't exist long ago. Of course we could all be luddites and keep the buggy whip manufacturers happy.

More desk jobs that require degrees that not all people can obtain. And getting a degree costs money that not all people have.

Technology is most definitely a double edged sword. Great for the economy and business, terrible for the lower/middle class as far as job opportunities are concerned. If we continue on this road, manual labor will become almost defunct. Less and less jobs requiring manual labor is just going to continue to hurt the lower/middle classes.

Good luck making a living without some sort of degree, it's extremely difficult and that's in large part due to technology taking over jobs that once many people used to have to work for.

Why pay a person 50k a year when you can have a machine or computer do that same persons job twice as efficient and for practically no cost? I don't see the point in that and neither do many companies in America.

Every company I have ever worked for has had some type of reimbursement system set up for their employees who do not have a degree to obtain one. In addition, there are a ton of scholarships available for those who are in high school and getting ready to move on to their "college years." In addition, the inclusion of online degree programs, and programs designed for use by the "working class" allows individuals to obtain their degrees without undue "stress."

In addition, a good proportion of individuals with college degrees don't even work in the same field that their degree was in. When someone looks at a resume, they just look to see if there is a degree acquired. They really don't care what it was obtained in unless the job being applied for was very specific. (e.g. medical school applications, law school, engineering, etc.) Even then, if the applicant shows a skillset that is useful to them the degree becomes less critical.

A very good friend of mine just recently obtained a new job paying $60,000 a year and he doesn't have a college degree. What he has is a strong work ethic, the ability/willingness to learn new skills, and experience from working in the same field for a good ten years even though he started at a lower level. (Him and I both started at the same level at the same pay-scale. I have a B.S. in Forensic Chemistry).
