Chances are, the future of rhythm games will only be partially what they are now. It is almost impractical to make a whole new set of plastic controllers for the next generation of rhythm games. Chances are that most people who would want to play the new game already have a musical instrument at home. The logical approach would be to just sell an adapter (like the one used by Rock Smith) to use your own keyboards/drum kits/Guitars/Bass/Mics in game.
Yes ,this will take out the main group of people that use it as a party game, but this is not hurting Rock Smith any, plus the fact that is would be incredibly cheaper selling a cord with technology already invented compared to making up and dishing out a whole new batch of controllers.
