Faster does not equal better. Often the melody is lost because the player is focused on speed.

I would much have a slower, more melodic tune. A song off of Judas Priest's "Painkiller" album can really show you how speed and melody can be properly balanced

A good guitarist doesn't neccessarily mean that they make good music. Musical composition and theory are infinitely more important.

Hell, I could probably play just as fast as or faster than some of the speed metal guys out there but I would completely lose the melody and just be making a lot of noise, which is what a lot of these guys who play incredibly fast are doing.

The important thing when playing guitar is to compose a great musical piece that people can listen to and go "wow, that player is really good". Otherwise it's just speed wankery with no purpose.

Balance between speed, composition, and melody are what are required to make a guitarist great. Alas, this is something that many modern bands lack.
