Depends on what kind of games he's in to, but some of the ones that are good:

    Resistance: Fall of Man
    Motorstorm
    Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Lega Star Wars: The Complete Saga (PS3 version is loaded with extra features)
    Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
    Heavenly Sword
    Folklore

Calling all Cars (download only) is also a lot of fun

There are also a handful of non-exclusive titles like CoD4, UT3, and the Orange Box.

    Online:
Super Stardust HD is a winner for sure.
PixelJunk Monsters is addictive and 2 player offline downloadable game.
    Warhawk is great.

If you haven't played it, the downloadable Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a highly enjoyable classic.

Pain is hilarious and fun, but not for everyone.

I like Super Puzzle Fighter II turbo, some like Tekken...

I enjoy snakeball, some don't....play the demo.

Blast Factor is also worth a check, so is FloW and Everyday Shooter.

Calling All Cars is super wacky and worth a demo download also.

LocoRoco: Coccorecho (spelling?) is hilarious and relaxing, but not the best game in the world. It's a good casual title.

    In Stores:
If you're gonna check out Lair (fun if you can get the hang of it) remember to update your system online first.

I enjoyed Full Auto II: Battle lines, Def Jam: Icon, the Dark Kingdom title, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for their multiplayer-ness - you can find these used for pretty cheap.

    Unreal Tournament III is solid, so is COD4, the Orange Box, Rainbow 6 Vegas, Resistance Fall of Man;

Ratchet and Clank is superb, Uncharted Drake's Fortune is superb, Heavenly Sword is worth a play through (for the jaw dropping character face animations and epic final battle if nothing else), Assassin's Creed is pretty fun but repetitive maybe wait for the next installment, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a yes, Devil May Cry 4 is out in 2 days,

Rock Band is epic except you can only play 3 player on the ps3 (buy the 3rd party guitar peripheral in March if Harmonix and Activision can't work out their differences by then)

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is a remake of an older Xbox game, and it's pretty darn sweet if you like 3rd person skill-based sword combat games done all ninja style.

Genji: Days of the Blade is pretty awesome, but suffers from camera issues.

the Eye of Judgment is an awesome PS Eye driven CCG, but is a big commitment and requires set-up and deck preparation time to be worth it for online play.

There are a number of good racing games, DiRT, Motorstorm, Stuntman: Ignition, Burnout Paradise...

Skate! is probably the best skating game ever made.

    Bladestorm seems pretty cool.

Folklore is neat, and uniquely enjoyable, but kind of weird and not for everyone, not necessarily for the gameplay but for the strange storytelling method and lack of voice acting, and the fact that you have to play through each bit twice.

    i don't play sports games.

Of course, if he bought an 80gb or 60gb model, there is an epic library of PS2 games to choose from, my favorites being God of War I&2, Shadow of the Colossus, Champions: Return to Norath, Ribbit King, Ratchet and Clank: Deadlocked, FFX, FFXII, Disgaea 1 and 2, and the 2 Katamari games.

that's as much as i know.

Here's a list by genre, considering the he can only get one game at a time. If not then he should go for broke!! there are a lot of great games out there for the PS3

    Music/Rithym
    RockBand (of course)

    FPS
Call of Duty 4 (no question!!)

    Third person shooters
    Warhawk

    Action/Adventure
Heavenly Sword or Uncharted Drake's fortune

    Platform
    Ratchet and Clank ToD

    Hack and slash Action
    Ninja Gaiden Sigma

    Trading Card games
The Eye of Judgement (well duh!! it's the only one out there ) This is a good deal since you get the game + the PS Eye camera bundled all for 70 bucks.

    Sports
Not my bag of tea, anyone is good I suppose

    Racing
    (See Sports)

the list is short I know, but trust me there a lot more to choose from, these are just a few that I have really enjoyed (or are still enjoying) playing.

Resistance is ok if you can get it for about $40. I wouldn't say it's worth more that that. Heavenly Sword is fun, but really short.

Are we talking about exclusives? Or anything good?

    Anything good, by the way

    Don't suggest COD4!

I thought we (PS3 owners) were voting with our wallets & not supporting Activision because of their stupid and short sighted business practices... How soon we forget, how weak we truly are...
