I agree, given the amount of time it took to get this site launch, I expected so much more from this site, this site doesn't come close to GH3's community site, an opportunity lost IMO because having a solid community site would add alot of value to the game.
I think the biggest thing this place needs is room to spread out. Basically everyone goes to the main Rock Band forum for everything wether it is the correct place to post or not.
We need to add more Forums and Sub-Forums into the Mix. There should be a Technical Issues Forum and then a XBox 360, PS2, PS3, and Wii (if that happend) forum to discuss information specific to those consoles. That might get rid of some of the Xbox vs PS3 threads.
I also like the Equipment Forum or "Warranty Voiders" Forum. Talk about how they got the Electronic Drum setup for Rockband, or some crazy modification to a Real Strat that they did to get it to work in Rock Band, etc.
Also, For me, Rock Band isn't really about Playing with People Online, I prefer it when people get together to play. Unfortunately the "Band Wanted" forum is basically a shout out place to get someone to play with online, at that moment. There should be Sub Forums within the Band Wanted that is separated by state. So that if I want to play with someone else from NY or CT I can post in there and not have it go 4 pages back in 2 hours so no one will see it. This way we can find others that want to do the Endless Setlist on Expert, etc.
Create a DLC Forum, leave it completely unmoderated, and just let people whine about the fact that their favorite band was not included in this weeks DLC. If you look at the General Rock Band Forum, 80% are "I Don't Like This Weeks DLC", 10% are about Online BWT, 5% about the PS3 Guitar Hero Patch. Leaving 5% for an actual question about the game, or something fun.
A bit more synergy between the forums and the Leaderboard/Rocker/Bands webpage. They feel like 2 completely different web pages connected only via a link on the page. Settings should be universal, etc.
A lot of the "anarchy" or discontent could be minimized you you guys would post what all is involved in selecting and converting songs for the DLC.
Why do some bands have more than one song (Cohead, Cambria) while other bands that are icons have none. (ACDC)
Why are most of the songs obscure. And then when we do get a band that is or was popular to the mainstream you pic an unpopular songs.
The Disc songs were great but the DLC has been terrible when you look at the songs that could have been selected.
I for one love the game and appreciate the weekly DLC but would be less critical if you guys would explain how you choose the DLC. Even if its nothing better than its Johns favorite band.
Is it money or licensing issues? You would think MTV has the clout to put out some TOP 10 hit songs in whatever Genre you choose!
just wanted to say I love all these suggestions and I hope HMX is able to implement some of these into the site.
ROCK YA LATER!!
As well, every time I come to this site I am frustrated/discontent. I imagine I'm not the only one. You need to deal with that before you even bother thinking about rules and whatnot.
Firstly I'm frustrated because it takes forever for each page to load, which is just annoying. But moreover, it seems to me that HMX makes no real contribution to the community. You guys need to be more transparent instead of being a mostly faceless company. Tell us what's on your minds! Tell us what's going on behind the scenes! Make us feel included and do something to address the questions that are asked many times a day, every day.
For example, every time I come here I'm reminded of the lack of voice chat for the PS3. That's to be expected, because thousands of PS3 users (like me) are outraged that such an integral feature is missing for no good reason. If there was an official statement about it, regardless of what it was, the community could move on and the constant threads about it could stop. But instead you guys just ignore any thread that mentions it, leaving the people posting in it feeling slighted and frustrated and ensuring anybody who comes here will be reminded how annoying it is to not have voice chat.
So basically, you need to appease the community before you worry about shaping it. Transparency on the contentious issues would go a LONG way to accomplishing this.
Midget makes a great point.
I still come to RB boards and website because the concept of game and community with regular music updates is a great one. If we ever get it right.
Having said that when I log on I still have some other guys picture showing instead of my picture and the linking service on XBOX360 does not work for me.
It says gamertag does not have any rockband data or whatever. Even though on xbox live all my stats show.
As Midget said give the site more bandwidth and fix the profile bugs, explain the process of picking DLC.
After this the bulk of your sudience will be less testy, We realize that this is tough and there are a lot of different personalities. But with the success of this game and the MTV muscle surely we can do better.
Having said that you guys are at least trying and we cant say that for some companies.
I didn't see this through the post, and I don't know if it would really work well in this environment. But maybe a moderating system such as the one that is incorporated by Slashdot.org could be beneficial, where people with greater Karma have more prevalent posts. Yes, there will be some "karma whoring", but it would give the ability for those posts that are lacking in real content to be filtered by the reader.
Just an idea.
one of the only reasons i came to this site was to get character pics and the like.
and unless i'v missed something (which is a possibility) that hasent seemed to have happened yet
Just one thing to add to my original post...
Part of a good community is actually getting something out of being part of the community. It could be knowledge about something that you didn't know or it could be something else. The point is that after 1 month of being a member, I do not feel I have gained anything by being a member/contributor to the community.
All I get, is sifting through pages and pages of posts about complaints and arguing. Or some Musician Elitist telling me what music is good and what is not (like I can't make up my own mind).
I truly have absolutely no reason to return, but I do hoping to finally get something out of being a member.
I belong to a Golf Forum also. It is not sponsored by any Corporation and is privately owned. Every once in a blue moon we might get Corporate Presence within the Forum from a company such as Callaway, Ping, Taylor Made, etc. It's a nice bonus, but not expected since it's not a forum owned and operated by any Manufacturer.
But, when Callaway hosted their own forum for a limited time, they had company Presence all over that place. If you were posting a question about say, the Callaway Golf Balls cover, the next day, you'll see a response from the VP of Golf Ball Cover Design (dramatized example).
I guess, my point is, since Harmonix is Hosting/Sponsoring this forum, I would guess many of the people who have joined, did so b/c they felt they might have direct communications with the development team. Maybe get some inside information or perhaps give direct feedback to the developers and watch it potentially become a reality (not that this would really happen any time soon, again, an dramatization).
Just my 2 cents. Great Game, poor community.
