Thread: Blue Ray?

1. #11
All PS3 retail games are on Blu-ray discs. This can allow for more content to be placed on the disc, but the quality of the image has nothing to do with the disc - only the content. Most games on Blu-ray won't even come close to filling the disc unless they add a massive amount of CG cutscenes. Some, if not most, blu-ray games probably easily fit on a DVD-9. Lots of games on PS2/XBOX that were on DVD only used about 20-30% of the disc.

The reason movies look and sound so much better on HD-DVD and Blu-ray is the fact that they don't have to be compressed as much, they are mastered at a higher resolution, and the audio is usually offered 100% uncompressed. You could put an HD signal on a DVD if you had a DVD player that could output the signal, but you would not be able to fit an entire movie on the disc at the higher resolution. Basically HD-DVD and Blu-ray are just storage media.

There's one thing I've never faound a straight answer for about Blu-ray/HD-DVD. Are the movies tied to a certain format (compression). If they have so much stroge space can an entire season/seires of an older TV program be placed on a single disc? Or does the video have to be a certain size, whether or not the show was in HD & Surround? I know from making normal DVD's formatting the video can be a super pain...

Target disagrees with your point.

I'm really hoping Blu-Ray wins out so that I can actually use my PS3 to play movies in HD.

I dont think so , haven't you read the article of how Project Gotham I dont know wich one well the newest one won't fit on a Normal Dvd , Solution BluRay. Games are becoming bigger and more complex each day so the developers will need more space so they can freely work without having any restrains.

Yeah, HD-DVDs/Blu Rays kick some serious ass. I finally got to watch a movie (300) in true HD and it was freaking amazing. Then, I put in a normal dvd and holy balls! Huge difference.Worth every penny

I know that some Second Gen Blue Ray drives 'will' support HD-DVD reading, and I would expect in the fullness of time that both formats will read/write both discs (ala dual format, like the DVD+ and DVD- combo drives)

I would be inclined to agree.. But the movie industry themselves are on board with BluRay much moreso than HD-DVD. And Blockbuster is only renting Bluray, That's a push. The Betamax vs. VHS war also had Porn and home recording issues. Betamax didn't give as much in the long run other than the picture quality. Whereas Bluray is still better off in more areas than that alone. But it is still too early to say for sure. Sony owns so many movie companies that if you really want to only watch HD movies here on out.. You'll need BR.

Without a 1080p TV Blu Ray and HDDVD are pointless. And as dar as PGR4, you really need to do some better research. They have already said they had to cut absolutely nothing from the game to "fit" it on a DVD-9.

If you link to an article, I'll check it out but any PGR game is definitely going to be on DVD because the XBOX 360 only plays DVD games and PGR is published by Microsoft studios. However, Blue Dragon is a multi-disc game (3 discs, link), so some games will not fit on a DVD - usually games with CG cutscenes (especially in HD).

Compression types: at first HD-DVD was using MPEG-4 and Blu-ray was using VC-1. Some reviews were saying that the MPEG-4 compression looked better, but it's more of an opinion. Now both blu-ray and HD-DVD use both depending on the movie. For instance a few new movies:

300 & TMNT on Blu-ray and HD-DVD are VC-1.
Disturbia on Blu-ray and HD-DVD is MPEG-4.

TV seasons are still multi-disc - even older shows. Link to Star Trak Original Series Season 1 HD-DVD

You don't need 1080p to appreciate HD, but you need an HD display 720p or greater. I was using a 720p HD projector than displays 1080i. I had it projected at 110". It looked AMAZING. (I moved and haven't figured out where to set it up yet.) My 1080i LCD TV looks pretty good too. If you can tell a difference between 1080i and 1080p, you've got an extremely good eye for detail.
