why is modern day rap so popular?

i am not sure why ever one loves all of this rap thats played on the radio and mtv. i would guess its because the chorus is repeated way too many times and for way too long, there for making the tune extremely catchy, and possibly because the topics that they are singing about make them bad like drugs, killing, and insane amounts of sex. and all of these young kids want to be bad and listen to it making sure everyone else knows they are listening to it to make themselves cool. please tell me why it is so popular and how i can get my girlfriend to stop listening to this garbage. thank you.

It is popular because many people like the idea of being filthy rich and having lots of promiscuous sex. Sex sells, and it appeals.

Now that rap is established, it is going through the same junk that Rock has faced for decades. Bunch of one-hit-wonders trying to make a fast buck.

Eventually the quickies will fade away, and the classics will stick.

I thought modern (or is that Mo-durn?) rap was popular because suburban white kids liked to pretend they were black... And just released on bail... So they could wear clothing that makes people look uneducated and stupid, instead of poor and devil-may-care... Get the point? O.o If so, explain it to me - PLEASE!

I think modern rap (or crap, as i like to call it) became popular simply because the media has made it more mainstream than any other music forms. Most kids these days look to music for an outlet of rebelion or just to fit in at school or something and rap is more acessable because its constantly being played on the radio and who knows how many tv channels... its either that or people are ******ed and cant understand what good music is.

I totally agree about it being crap mate as ive said before I don't even class it as music. But where I come from its not popular anymore it seems to have been replaced by indie rock. Theres only 2 people I know who likes rap
