Most solos that "don't fit" are usually just an unusual choice. It still grows on repeated listens though.
The Carpenters solo threw me at first. I still don't feel like it was the way it was intended to be. It sounds like they just plugged straight into the console to get that fuzz sound, but a glossier sound would have made it feel a little more unified with the rest of the song. I've still gotten used to the solo, so it doesn't strike me as being too weird.

To be honest, so do I.

There's no denying the technical expertise of Petrucci and Portnoy, and even the underrated Myung (don't know why he isn't mentioned in the same breath as Entwistle and Geddy and Lemmy), but as far as songs go, their composition leaves much to be desired. LaBrie is *not* a great vocalist, but even if he was, the songs as written wouldn't reflect it. Dream Theater's songs tend to be excessively bloated, heavy on the instrumental portions (to showcase talent, I understand), but without real direction or cohesion.

By comparison, look at Muse, who does it SO much better. (And Dream Theater's members admit that they admire Muse a helluva lot; "Panic Attack" was written as an homage to Muse's stylings.) Muse songs can be very long, too, but they always have direction and purpose....the melody always stays true to itself and forms a cohesive song. Unlike Panic Attack, which wanders around aimlessly like several different songs at once, never quite getting there.

(Not to mention the fact that Matthew Bellamy has ten times the voice of James LaBrie. )

The whole song isn't slow... just the first half is. I actually love the solo. The whole song itself is just pure awesomeness.

Proof Zach Wlyde can't get through a song without shredding.

The solo from Walk by Pantera. Even though Dime really nails the solo and it sounds amazing, it just doesn't fit into the melody or the mood of the song.
