Post Country Band - game design and set list

So it appears that a large group of very determined people want to see country stay as far away from "their" game as possible. Despite the high demand - they say, Get your own game.

This leaves open the door for a Country Band game, functionally similar to Rock Band, but appealing to country fans. That is what this thread is designed to discuss.

Please visit my poll on The Fate of Country Music to vote concerning just how much country ought to enter into Rock Band and whether a Country Band game is even a good idea. In addition, here are some threads for specific Country artists:

    1. Kenny Chesney
    2. Johnny Cash
    3. Taylor Swift
    4. Drive-By Truckers
    5. Linda Ronstadt
    6. Roger Miller

    And some for specific songs:

    1. More Than a Memory (Garth Brooks)

    And some threads for sub-genres:

    1. Alt-Country
    2. Southern Rock (also Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Also, there's the Comedic Songs thread, in which you could try to suggest amusing Country songs that might make it by virtue of not being entirely serious. I'd post the link, but I can't find it. Will post it when I do.

And here's the old Country thread - please do not post in it. Your post should go on my Fate of Country Music poll if it's about country in general, and on my Country Band thread here if it's a suggestion for country content in the game.

There's also support for a wider range of music in general, so don't forget to pop in there and point to some good country.

(Note: If reading the rest of this text bores you, just skip to the proposed set list in the next post.)

(To those who hate country music: Stay out of my thread. Seriously, unless you have something that's going to help refine this suggestion, you're not doing any good here. This is not a thread to complain about how much you hate country or how much it does not belong in Rock Band. Go make your own anti-country threads.)

Anyway. To avoid stereotypes that lead to misunderstandings: Bear in mind that this is about the modern country fan, who is in his 20's, not his 80's. That "twangy stuff" that killed the Martians is more suited to people too old to care about video games. Garth Brooks just surpassed the Beatles for record sales, becoming #2 (behind Elvis), so there's definitely a huge market for country, and Country Band would want to tap into that.

Given what we have to work with, some details: The graphics will be changed to appeal to country fans. The venues will be changed to appeal to country fans. The audiences will act differently, of course. There will be a major event in Nashville.

We're going to want country characters with a wide selection of country clothing and at least three country-themed attitudes. I would lobby for at least one height/weight combo that allowed us to make stout/overweight aging country stars, as opposed to the range of normal/anorexic/starvedinAfrica that is currently the choice in Rock Band. There will have to be a good selection of hats, boots, and belts. Also embroidered jackets.

Furthermore, I want to see access to the Rock Band character set as well - the ability to make a fully Rock character and use him in the country game. I would want to be able to make a character, assign him the Soulful Country attitude (or whatever), then hand him a cowboy hat, gothic pants and the skeleton shirt, if I so desire. Or have a Gothic attitude for a totally country-looking girl.

Lastly, at least for this quick overview: We'll need access to all downloadable content from Rock Band, so that investing in Country Band does not mean that we can't get the latest Lynrd Skynyrd pack or Alice Cooper's House of Fire. Also, we should be able to purchase (perhaps at a reduced rate, less than one dollar per song) any or all of the Rock Band songs (yay, I can avoid buying the SHOUTING songs - no more Epic for me!).

AND it should be possible to go into the options and make playlists to include or exclude whichever songs we want, so as to affect the list of playable songs and the songs that pop up under random. Sure, I might want to play a lot of rock songs on my own, but at the family reunion, I want to make sure the kiddies don't hit across songs that their parents might object to. Or let my great-grandmother find out that I like Alice Cooper. You know. (Hypothetically, of course. Not the Alice Cooper part - I love Alice Cooper now. But I no longer have grandmothers, let alone great-grandmothers, who might complain about my liking him.)

So... there's the gist. Add in your suggestions, and definitely suggest any songs for the setlist! I'll post a revised setlist in my reserved post once we get going.

ETA: I am now thinking that it would be cool to have a STEEL GUITAR CONTROLLER. I had no idea that a steel guitar was anything other than a normal guitar with, I dunno, steel somewhere in the construction. It's apparently nothing like what I thought: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_guitar

And just as the drum controller is a gateway instrument to real drums, I think the steel guitar controller would be....

Not that I'm being realistic, because it's a slide thing, and I'm not sure slide instruments would work as controllers in the first place. But it would still be cool.

Come to think of it... a table guitar might work like the vocals - try to follow the sound, hit the right pitch, up and down. That might be REALLY cool.

Sigh... steel guitar controller will never work

    Post Revised Setlist

    UPDATE 2

I'm going to start posting the setlist in a proposed tier system. It's rough and unfinished at present, but here's the start at least. Note that I'm organizing by the perceived difficulty of the drums, since to me that seems the easiest criteria to assess. And yes, this isn't the Rock Band tier system; Robby_Rathbone and I are working on a better tier system through email, so until we get that worked out, I'm gonna stick with this just to organize them a bit.

    BONUS: Online Online (Brad Paisley)

    Sixth Tier

    1. Country Boy Country Boy (Ricky Skaggs) (want the live version? live version check out that pickin'!)
    2. T-R-O-U-B-L-E T-R-O-U-B-L-E (Travis Tritt)

BONUS: How Do You Like Me Now? How Do You Like Me Now? (Toby Keith)

    ...not as yet put together.

    REST OF POST

To people who want to hunt through country music for good choices but can't think, try this site: http://www.countrymusicmood.com/ - you can find lists of songs on a certain topic, e.g., Drinking Songs.

    I) Start the game right: First or second tier should have Alan Jackson's Gone Country. Probably.

II) In no particular order, these songs. I'm splitting them into male and female vocalists, plus dual vocalists and bands, so we can see what we have and try to achieve some balance, if that's even possible. Note: I expect whatever Elvis song we decide on may be remastered by a good Elvis impersonator specifically for the game.

    4. Bird Dog or Cathy's Clown (The Everly Brothers)

    Bands - Male Vocalists

    1. The Devil Went Down to Georgia (The Charlie Daniels Band)

    17. She's In Love with the Boy (Trisha Yearwood)
    18. He Thinks He'll Keep Her (Mary Chapin Carpenter)
    19. Watch Me (Lorrie Morgan)

Also, please suggest a good Johnny Cash song... I sadly know very little of his repetoire, and most of the ones I do know wouldn't fit (unless Ghost Riders in the Sky would actually be a good choice...).

    III) Vocal Challenge

These are songs where the lyrics are very fast and the lines fairly long - breath control is mandatory. Includes:

Ain't Going Down Till the Sun Comes Up (Garth Brooks)

Sold (Grundy County Auction) (John Michael Montgomery)

I've Been Everywhere, Man (Johnny Cash or Hank Snow)

    IV) DLC Packs

Check a couple posts down for info on these (I knew I should have reserved more posts).

    V) Strummy Songs

There are many country songs whose guitar parts are what I would term "strummy"... I think this might be a problem for the game, but I don't know. So I'll stick them here.

    1. The Gambler (Kenny Rogers)
    2. Driving My Life Away (Eddie Rabbitt): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ij_EQFGzwaE

My idea for the insturments would be:

    -Banjo
    -Fiddle
    -Jug set (instead of drums)
    -Harmonica/Microphone

I do not endorse this though...just laughed at the idea of a band playing these instruments with all of the colored buttons and whatnot...

Wow man...you are 100% dead on with this...I cannot wait to see your setlist, and dont worry, I will be adding to it! I really really hope they listen to us on this one. Country is so much more popular than most of the garbage in Rock Band anyway, so just dedicate a whole game to it! I applaude you!

    Post Now start suggesting!

Anyway, once I figure out how to embed videos (or someone tells me how!), I'll start showing these hits off in posts on this thread.

    DLC Packs

These packs are separate because they're thematically related or have similar content, and a person who would pay for one would likely pay for all. Also, some of the themes or sets may offend or annoy certain segments of the target demographic, so they shouldn't be mandatory - e.g., the drinking songs. But these are fairly large "packs" and thus would be released in installments, unless the Powers That Be decide to go crazy and release a good dozen or more thematically related songs all at once. Which would be darn cool.

    Drinking Songs

I love 'em; they're a country staple; they shouldn't be mandatory. Now, there's a wide variety of country songs related to drink, as shown by http://www.countrymusicmood.com/song...ing-song-list/ - so there's plenty to choose from. As a start, I'd include:

    1. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere (Alan Jackson)
    2. Beer Run (Garth Brooks)
    3. The More I Drink (Blake Shelton)
    4. Two Piña Coladas (Garth Brooks again)
    5. Longneck Bottle (Garth Brooks again)...
    6. Family Tradition (Hank Williams Jr.)
    7. I Love This Bar (Toby Keith)
    8. Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off (Joe Nichols)
    9. Beer in Mexico (Kenny Chesney)
    10. Guys Like Me (Eric Church)
    11. Dust on the Bottle (David Lee Murphy)
    12. My Friends Say (Luke Bryan)
    13. Drinkin' My Baby Goodbye (The Charlie Daniels Band)
    14. I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink (Merle Haggard)
    15. Friends in Low Places (Garth Brooks... wait, did I do him already?)
    16. Party Crowd (David Lee Murphy)
    17. Ten Rounds with José Cuervo (Tracy Byrd)
    18. Get My Drink On (Toby Keith)
    19. Pop a Top (Alan Jackson)
    20. José Cuervo (Shelly West)
    21. Dumas Walker (Kentucky Headhunters): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIzAxFHIMu0&NR=1
    22. Drinkin' Bone (Tracy Byrd): http://youtube.com/watch?v=6f70c9nrB6g

...there's just tons. I hope put together a decent proposed list eventually.

    Inspirational Songs

Okay, so these are here mostly because the cynical, jaded folk aren't going to enjoy them, but, again, someone who buys one is most likely going to buy all. These songs are bits of victory in life; the ability of people to realize they're on a wrong path and change their ways. Also those bits of advice that prove useful to recall in times of trouble. I'm sure that many, like me, will consider them to be among the best songs out there. This pack includes such gems as:

    1. Going Through Hell (Rodney Atkins)
    2. Stand (Rascal Flatts)
    3. Some People Change (Montgomery Gentry)
    4. Wasted (Carrie Underwood)
    5. I'm a Survivor (Reba McEntire)
    6. Point of Light (Randy Travis)
    7. Find Out Who Your Friends Are (Tracy Lawrence...actually, prefer this in the main set)
    8. The Chain of Love (Clay Walker)
    9. She Didn't Have Time (Terri Clark)
    10. Ten Thousand Angels (Mindy McCready)
    11. Stronger Woman (Jewel)
    12. Little Rock (Collin Raye)
    13. The Impossible (Joe Nichols)

Splitting off the Advice group, we get:

    1. I Hope You Dance (Lee Ann Womack)
    2. Live Like You Were Dying (Tim McGraw)
    3. Better Get to Livin' (Dolly Parton)
    4. Love a Little Stronger (Diamond Rio)
    5. You've Got to Stand for Something (Aaron Tippin)
    6. Then What? (Clay Walker)
    7. Don't Blink (Kenny Chesney)
    8. Isn't That Everything? (Danielle Peck)
    9. Don't Worry 'Bout a Thing (SheDaisy)

    Etc.

    Turn It Up!

The louder songs that encourage people to really shout it out, they're going to appeal to a certain group. These are more in-your-face and include also some of the more, hrm, confrontational pieces.

    1. Hell Yeah (Montgomery Gentry)
    2. Loud (Big & Rich)
    3. Play Something Country (Brooks & Dunn)
    4. Kiss This (Aaron Tippin)
    5. Johnny Cash (Jason Aldean)
    6. My Give-a-Damn's Busted (Jo Dee Messina)

    Etc.

    Tribute to America

Not sure on naming here, and I definitely think "Patriotic Pack" is going to rub a lot of people the wrong way, but these are songs that honor America, our soldiers, and freedom, as well as broaching the subject of what it's like to be in war. Since some people don't want that content brought up in their gaming experience, obviously it's optional DLC. Here are a couple suggestions:

    1. The Fighting Side of Me (Merle Haggard)
    2. The 8th of November (Big & Rich)
    3. Proud to Be an American (Lee Greenwood)
    4. I'm an American Boy (Eddie Rabbitt)
    5. All-American Girl (Carrie Underwood)... although I swear that word has no bearing on the lyrical contents. Eh well.
    6. Happiest Girl in the Whole USA (Donna Fargo)
    7. Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (Toby Keith)
    8. Iraq and I Roll (Clint Black)
    9. Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly (Aaron Tippin)
    10. Only in America (Brooks & Dunn)

I admit, some of these aren't so much patriotic as USA-centric (could as easily say "The Happiest Girl in London" without much change in meaning)... I doubt that type of song needs to be separated.

    Working Man

Songs about the stress of having to work for a living. Always fun to complain through music, get it out of your system... you know why you sing along in the car, right?

    1. 40-Hour Week (Alabama)
    2. Finally Friday (George Jones)
    3. Working Man Blues (Merle Haggard)

Many more where those came from. Could include Trucker Songs in the Working Man Pack or have them in their own pack:

    1. Six Days on the Road (Sawyer Brown)
    2. Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler) (Alabama)
    3. Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses (Kathy Mattea)
    4. Movin' On (Merle Haggard, possibly with Brooks & Dunn)

    Family Life

Songs about parenting and reasonably happy families.

    1. Mr. Mom (Lonestar)
    2. Just Another Day in Paradise (Phil Vassar)
    3. It's a Beautiful Life (Kenny Rogers)
    4. Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days) (The Judds)

    Etc.

    Ballads

Not sure that's the right word either. These are the softer, slower, quieter songs - still containing all the instruments (not that I wouldn't love a pack purely for acoustic guitar and vocals). They're the kind you enjoy in the calmer moments, or those that celebrate love.

    1. Lost in This Moment (Big & Rich)
    2. Our Song (Taylor Swift)
    3. Love Is a Beautiful Thing (Phil Vassar)
    4. Why Not Me? (The Judds)
    5. He Stopped Loving Her Today (George Jones)
    6. Luckenbach, Texas (Waylon Jennings)
    7. Carrying Your Love with Me (George Strait)
    8. Whisper My Name (Randy Travis)
    9. Dream On (Oak Ridge Boys)
    10. I Would Have Loved You Anyway (Trisha Yearwood)
    11. Shameless (Garth Brooks)
    12. Why Didn't I Think of That? (Doug Stone)
    13. I Have to Surrender (Ty Herndon)
    14. Maybe He'll Notice Her Now (Mindy McCready)
    15. That's As Close As I'll Get to Loving You (Aaron Tippin)
    16. I'll Always Come Back (K. T. Oslin)
    17. House of Cards (Mary Chapin Carpenter)
    18. One More Day (Diamond Rio)
    19. Who You'd Be Today (Kenny Chesney)
    20. A Broken Wing (Martina McBride)
    21. Just Another Woman in Love (Anne Murray)
    22. Dixieland Delight (Alabama)

    Etc.

    Christian

Those with explicitly Christian messages can go here.

    1. When I Get Where I'm Going (Brad Paisley)
    2. Three Wooden Crosses (Randy Travis)
    3. What If Jesus Came Back Like That? (Collin Raye?)
    4. Jesus Take the Wheel (Carrie Underwood)

    Etc.

    Girls' Pack and Boys' Pack

Here's where the "glory in my gender" songs come in.

    1. I'm Still a Guy (Brad Paisley)
    2. This One's for the Girls (Martina McBride)
... not many in my head just yet, obviously. Or, at least, not off the top of my head.

    Pick-Up Lines

Those songs that are all about unusual ways to pick girls up or things that girls are attracted to:

    1. Pick-Up Man (Joe Diffie)
    2. She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy (Kenny Chesney)
    3. Ticks (Brad Paisley)
    4. Pickin' Wildflowers (Keith Anderson)
    5. Good Directions (Billy Currington)

    Young Love

Songs that feature cute moments about falling in love, especially for young'uns.

    1. Check Yes or No (George Strait)
    2. She's In Love with the Boy (Trisha Yearwood)
    3. Norma Jean Riley (Diamond Rio)
    4. John Deer Green (Joe Diffie)
    5. Mama, He's Crazy (The Judds)
    6. Rebecca Lynn (Bryan White)
    7. Don't Cry, Joni (Conway Twitty)

    Cowboy Pack

    1. Cowboy, Take Me Away (Dixie Chicks)
    2. Rodeo (Garth Brooks)
    3. Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) (Garth Brooks)
    4. Amarillo by Morning (George Strait)
    5. How 'bout Them Cowgirls (George Strait)
    6. Should Have Been a Cowboy (Toby Keith)
    7. I Miss Billy the Kid (Toby Keith)
    8. Cadillac Ranch (Chris LeDoux)
    9. My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys (Willie Nelson)

Yeah, but given the skacore revival of the late 90's, ska could fit perfectly within the confines of Rock Band. Country Band, on the other hand, really needs to fit in its own universe, since Rock and Country are so diametrically opposed in most people's minds.

    Arrow Yeah, best we separate

Note: We do have a Ska Band thread now.

The thing is not so much that modern country couldn't fit in Rock Band (and, in fact, the developers have as much as stated that it's going to join the group eventually). Rather, the rock fans think that country has cooties. And since I can see a lot of benefits to a country-themed game over merely adding country to Rock Band, I'm gonna go with their suggestion to "get your own game!"

'Cuz being able to play an aging, stocky male country singer with a hat and boots and a shiny belt buckle and an embroidered shirt and a swagger... that actually really, seriously appeals to me. And I doubt they'd go that far in adding character models to Rock Band, but they might go that far with a Country Band game. (Not that it wouldn't be super cool in an updated Rock Band to be able to play, what's his name, Meatloaf? who's now stocky and aging too... or so I take it from the music video I saw. Who says you have to be young and thin to be cool?)

Anyway, as my growing set list shows: Even without pulling multiple songs from any given artist, there is a HUGE selection of potential tracks. They cover the four basic Rock Band instruments (some leaving open the possibility of an eventual fiddle or banjo controller), and many of them would fit right in stylistically if the rock fans would just stop thinking "Country, ewww, get it away!" But as long as that's the reaction held by serious rock fans, then I'm not opposed to working out a restraining order sort of deal.

Although, dang it, I better be able to download all the original Rock Band songs too. After working so hard to learn the vocals to Tom Sawyer and I Think I'm Paranoid, I want to continue to play them. This game taught me to like rock (and introduced me to Alice Cooper, currently my favorite rock artist), and I'm not giving that up.

The thing is, if there ever was a Country Band game, I don't think HMX would be the one to develop it. They seem to be mostly rock fans. I'm not a big fan, though I think it might as well have it's own game, and maybe something like Hip Hop band... not that I would buy it.

But the last two paragraphs are where I don't think it could work. Why have a separate game if you just want to link the two together? It would be very nice, but I'm not sure it would work. And the last paragraph is something the game needs in general (the ability to "blacklist" songs).
