Rock Band at AVCon Adelaide, Australia

AVCon is South Australia's biggest Anime and Videogaming convention and is running again this year in late July. Since starting in 2002 the convention has gained in popularity and last year had almost 2000 attendees.

A friend and I are organizing a Rock Band event which will run over 2 of the 3 days of the convention. Rock Band will be set up on a stage so you can perform infront of the crowd, and hopefully we will have a smaller private set up for those who suffer stage fright.

Saturday will be Auditions where you and 3 friends can try out for a spot in the 'Battle of the Rock Band Bands'. Sunday morning will be freeplay where you can just play for the hell of it.

Sunday afternoon will be the competition, with an MC hosting the event, a panel of judges and the event filmed lived and projected on stage, mixed with the RB footage.

This is our plan anyway, its pretty ambitious. Making a stage, getting all the audio, visual and lighting equipment etc, but we're pretty confident we can pull it off.

Prizes will be awarded to all the bands who make it into the comp which include official RB merchandise, and hopefully something big for the winner.

For more info on AVCon check out www.AVCon.org.au

Oh Nick - I hope you're not volunteering your own kit for this......

I might swing by and take a look though.

I have agreed that I will volunteer it, although contracts must be signed first saying they will owe me money if ANYTHING breaks or gets stolen. Which really i wouldnt mind, i'd get a new guitar that i wont need to mod every month to keep working.

My drums have gum rubber pads, will soon have extra support and i have a real bass pedal.

I will still try to source a new kit for it, but if it cant be found mine will do.

Should be cool though. I've had a lot of people play on my RB set. Over the last few months I've had a RB party every fortnight with random unknown ppl turing up all the time. It's about sharin the love man.

Probably wouldn't hurt to ask JohnLok or Sean if they'd be kind enough to consider donating a PAL 360 version as a winning prize.

Yeah, I dunno how much they can help with that kinda thing, HMX are the Dev's, EA are the distributers.

Luckily enough we've got a contact at EA Australia so hopefully that will help us get some really cool prizes.

have you worked out how the competition will work yet?

eg. what will get you through to the next round (score/performance/etc)
will there be a minimum level you need to perform on (hard/expert) and will all members need to be on the same level?
open song choice? and will it include DLC songs?

    just curious

The competition will be mostly judged on performance by a panel of judges and partially the crowds response to the band. The game wont have a local release by the time of the comp so 99% of ppl will have never played the drums and wont be used to the RB guitar.

I have a song list made up of with acceptable songs to play during Saturdays rehearsals and Sunday mornings freetime, basically the shortest songs. Closer to the date I will make a list of cool DLC they will be able to play.

Players will not be able to navigate the menu and will be briefed b4 playing not to drum etc while the menu is up, if they do, they get kicked off. It might be harsh but we gotta be tough so ppl dont continually screw it up.

During the finals we will encourage the band to play a longer more epic song that hasnt been done a billion times over the last 2 days.
