Thumbs up I'm there! (tentatively)

Cafe' Asia is right down the street, so I'll definitely try to make this one!
I just sent out the mass e-mail to the rest of my rocker friends telling them about this event!

A 20min drive from DC to Clarendon is more appealing to me than a 50min drive to Potomac Mills, for me that is.

Thumbs up REVIEW: B+; but I'll be back next week though!

I was there, D.R.

This is how they had things set-up:

Bands (consisting of 3 or 4 members) signed up on a Battle of the Bands List. Each band played the same 2 songs, with every member selecting the Easy difficulty for "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer and selecting Medium difficulty for "Next To You" by The Police. There were 6 bands who signed up this particular time. Regardless of how many bands would have signed up, there would only be 3 slots available for those 3 bands, who had the highest total-band scores to move on to the next round of competition. The next round of competition consisted of each band attempting their best performance of the same song, with every member selecting Hard difficulty. The song each band played this particular round was selected by the singer of the lowest scoring band and it ended up being "Orange Rush" by R.E.M. (which I happen to despise, lol)

The band I played with, GUMBO, initially only had 3 members, so the host on the mic asked if anybody else would like to join their band to help them out. I stepped up to the challenge (playing bass), where I ended up saving the drummer 3 times and saving the singer 2 times for the first round. We managed to make it to 3rd place and move up to the Hard round where I saved the singer 2 times again and saved the drummer 3 times again. But we ended up crapping out anyway, because I couldn't manage to muster up enough Overdrive energy in time to keep us all afloat again.

The winning band received gift cards for something and got to perform an encore song of their choice, which the female singer selected and requested for everyone to sing-along to: "Wanted Dead or Alive"

Review: B+

All in all, it was a fun night.
It was only slightly disorganized, but not bad for something new, since they're still developing rules, etc.
Standing on their stage felt kind of awkward because, since I'm 6'0", I had to look down at their plasma for gameplay, instead of looking up at a projection screen like at Hard Times Cafe.
The wireless XBox360 Strat controller they supplied sucked because the stock tilt switch was inoperable.
(BACK button Overdrive engaging sucks major azz!)
I will be bringing my own modded wireless guitar for gameplay next time.

I'm about 20 minutes north of D.C., does that make it around 45 minutes for me would you say? I'd probably be more easily available on Friday nights but if the trip would be shorter on Tuesday I'll try to make arrangements.

It depends on which city in Maryland you're coming from, Colt. I live smack-dab in the middle of DC, so that's why it takes me that long. It could very well be the case that the trip from where you are is only an extra 10 minutes via the beltway or something. But you'll have to get on http://maps.yahoo.com/dd to check that out for sure.

nd side question for you, was there a screen behind you on the stage and tv's on the floor or just tv's on the floor?

Yeah, the band vs. band tournament isn't really set-up for hardcore competition or experienced gameplayers. It's geared more toward familiarizing the layman with RockBand, period.
Still fun though.

There is a stage. The TV faces the audience at a diagonal angle. The players get on-stage to perform too and face the TV (players' backs towards the audience at an angle).
It's kind of awkward, so we should think of some set-up suggestions to offer the host, once we're there (if they haven't made changes to it already).

Players should definitely not have their backs to the audience, even at an angle. That's just poor stage presence

I would have a little more fun if I was playing to a crowd, especially if I was on easy-med difficulty. I can sometimes play those without having to look at the screen.
