//Unofficial\\ Battle of the Insane Bands: Zappa vs Primus

two bands known for their versitality and "fun" songs with "fun" lyrics

FRANK ZAPPA & the MOTHERS OF INVENTION

Frank Vincent Zappa[1] (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, musician, and film director. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa established himself as a prolific and distinctive composer, electric guitar player and band leader. He worked in various musical genres and wrote music for rock bands, jazz ensembles, synthesizers, symphony orchestra and created musique concrète works. In addition to his music he created short and feature-length films, music videos, and album covers.

Zappa maintained a productive career that encompassed composing, recording, touring, producing and merchandising his own and others' music, although major commercial successes, especially within his native United States, were few. He produced almost every one of the more than 60 albums he released with the Mothers of Invention, or as a solo artist, himself. He received multiple Grammy nominations and won the Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1988 for the album Jazz from Hell.[2] Zappa was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. In 2005, his album with the Mothers of Invention, We're Only in It for the Money (1968), was inducted into the United States National Recording Preservation Board's National Recording Registry. The same year, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 71st in its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[3] In 2007, his birthplace Baltimore declared August 9 official "Frank Zappa Day" in his honor.[4]

Politically, Zappa was a self-proclaimed "practical conservative."[5] He was a strident critic of mainstream education and organized religion.[6] He was a forthright and passionate advocate for freedom of speech and the abolition of censorship, and his work embodied his skeptical view of established political processes and structures.[7] Zappa strongly opposed recreational drug use, even though the use of drugs was common among musicians.[8]

Zappa was married to Kathryn J. "Kay" Sherman (1960–1964; no children), and in 1967, to Adelaide Gail Sloatman, with whom he remained until his death. They had four children: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. Gail Zappa manages the businesses of her late husband under the company name the Zappa Family Trust.

    vs

    PRIMUS

Primus is an American rock band currently composed of singer and bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde, and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander.

Their music is difficult to define, and while usually considered by critics to be funk metal or alternative metal, Primus has been called everything from "thrash-funk meets Don Knotts, Jr."[2] to "alternative rock" to "the Freak Brothers set to music."[3] Les Claypool himself once described their music as "psychedelic polka."[4] Primus is the only band with its own ID3v1 genre tag, as extended by Winamp.[5]

The diversity of their sound has allowed Primus to gain a modest segment of fans from many different rock sub-genres. They are characterized by their irreverent approach to music. Primus release their records on Claypool's Prawn Song Records label, a parody of Led Zeppelin's Swan Song. The band's catchphrase is no longer "Primus Sucks!" because the band thought it became tiresome, although it was a tradition that dated back to their first album, and many fans still chant it at concerts.

Dang it, why, why these particular two, it's hard to pick.

Since I'm more familiar with Primus I'll vote for them but Zappa has my vote for the most fun songs.

Zappa all the way. While very talented Primus just doesn't come close. Frank's music ran the gambit from full on orchestra pieces to 50's style doo wop. Frank also did what he could to continue supporting music in other ways, a rabid opponent of the PMRC's efforts to censor music in the 80's, encouraging young children to express themselves through music, giving artists an opportunity through his record label straight records etc.

dont forget he was the first artist to have an Explicit Lyrics sticker on an instrumental album, lol

plus Tipper Gore might hate him, but Al Gore loved him

and it was legendary when he was on Crossfire

Zappa all the way. I like Primus but no other band an begin to compare to Zappa for me. He was just a music genius. He made a fantastic and eclectic range of music, making use of every and any instrument effectively and including some of the most hilarious satire of human society I have ever seen. Though I have yet to own his entire(large) discography, I have yet to find an album of his that I don't like.

Like both but Zappa wins in my book.

Also Buckethead and Axl Rose must be somewhere in these insane people battles.
