You Know What Bands I Don't Really Care For?

I never cared for groups like Jimmy Eat World, MGMT, We The Kings, or Death Cab for Cutie. Pretty much any of todays Alternative if you can call some of these bands this. There are exceptions such as The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, or The Strokes. Let me show you how Alternative has changed (based on what record companies consider Alt):

    80s:

Although New Wave wasn't really considered Alternative, it was an influence on it.

    90s:

Yes Grunge is a sub-genre of Alternative.

    2000s

You will be surprised! This group although a much heavier rap influence, stations will consider it Alt!

Alternative is such a meaningless, lazy label to throw on any band, and much like terms such as metal, indie, and emo, very few people have the same definition of the word. I wouldn't call a single one of these bands alternative (except for We the Kings and Flobots, neither of whom I'm that familiar with, and Nirvana) even though I recognize that some of these bands get lumped in with the genre pretty often. I'm not sure what my point is, I mean you can like or dislike whatever bands you want. I guess I just don't buy the Pet Shop Boys as an alternative band, no matter what their record label says.

I always interpreted alternative rock as rock music with a punk influence (sometimes shallow and sometimes deep) but is still not punk music, nor does it claim to be. Like Nirvana ;p

true, on second hand, i always interpreted alternative rock as modern rock that radio stations are too lazy to catogorize, so they throw a bunch different **** together and play it as a block of alternative music consisting of weezer, beastie boys, everclear, coldplay, nirvana, and nickleback most of the time, or similar bands, instead of nerd rock, rap-rock, grunge, hard rock, punk and metal

did this really need to be a thread?

Alternative, classic rock, pop and oldies are all part of the same family of radio formats that people consider genres but aren't really. Grunge, punk, metal and blues are genres because something that is one of those genres is and always will be a part of that genre, but in 30 years no one will be calling modern alternative alternative, they will define it as something else.

Which comes to another discussion on whether punk can be called New Wave. I can but it can't. New Wave means the next wave of European music. Punk included. But if you listen to a song by The Psychedelic Furs vs. a song by The Ramones, you will see how different they are. The other reason why radio station place punk into an 80s New Wave hour or whatever is becuase they feel there is a lack of punk for them to play that single genre for however long they want it.

All mainstream bands nowadays. Give me Finnish metal or any badazz eurpoean metal band and that's all I care for.
