I couldn't disagree more strongly with your above quote. We don't need 5 star artists every week, but how about something that was a little more widely popular than the Pixies.
It's nearing a year after Rockband's original release and we still haven't seen ANY 80's hairband music. While HMX is busy screwing around releasing crap like the Pixies, we are missing out on Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Warrant, Winger, Queensryche, Poison, Great - White Lion/Snake, etc., etc.
Or how about some 90's? More STP, Better Than Ezra, Blind Melon, White/Rob Zombie, Tom Petty, Counting Crows, Train, Green Day, Seven Mary Three, and dare I say Nirvana.
I say "dare I say", because with arguable objections most of these bands are second tier bands. . . Not the 5 star bands you mention. I didn't say Led Zeppelin, U2, The Beatles, Pearl Jam, Van Halen and so forth. . .
And let's take Van Halen as an example. . . While Rockband is screwing around producing tracks for a band like "The Pixies". Activision is out signing a band like Van Halen to an exclusive contract.
It's not so much what HMX is releasing that I take objection to, it's what they aren't. Because the more big bands they pass on to grab the niche audience, the more of a chance they give Activision to take that big band away from them.
How many great bands do we, in the Rockband camp, have to lose before HMX wakes up. And its not just BANDS. We have bands. . . GNR and AC/DC are great examples. But how about some great songs by those bands??? Motley Crue pops to mind for this argument - Is there anyone out there that wouldn't have rather had Girls, Girls, Girls or Dr. Feelgood over any of the promotional tripe we've been sold up to this point?
Big bands mean NOTHING without big songs!
Don't get me wrong. I love this game, but there are so many ways I could see it being better than it is. I am as excited for Rockband 2 as the next kid (regardless of the kid's age - I'm 38). That is what I'm harping about - its about missed opportunities!
