There's 2 bands that were in my high school last and both of them sucked really so they don't deserve any appreciation. One was a punk/pop rock band called A Clear Blurr, they are playing on Warped Tour this year and I really don't know why because they absolutely suck. Another screamo/hardcore band called Kill The Silence and they also suck.

My band is still on the rise, we don't have a name yet and we don't have a vocalist. We are trying to become a progressive metal band, but I don't see that happening since we don't have too much knowledge of music theory.

You might, Chuck Schuldiner didn't know that much theory but managed to make some nice progressive music towards the end of his career.

True, I understand most of the basics from taking music theory 2 years in high school. I know time signatures, key signatures, tempos, modes, scales, etc. Our drummer also knows some theory along with our keyboardist. But overall, we don't have that much knowledge and it'll be tough to write music as technical as prog is.

Use the concepts you do know and break the rules, that can often to lead to progressive music.

Prog isn't defined by being uber-technical, just try and push the envelope, experiment and you know... progress?
