Official "Forced rating thread" - Drummer Edition

Since we have the forced listening thread, our own opinions on what drummers we love, I figured a way to get word around and open discussion would be to post videos of our fav. drummers for the person below to watch and rate. This would allow for more discussion and less flaming than a over/under rated list.

It works like this, the person will rate the video on a scale from 1-10 and discuss what they like about it, then post their own video for this is cycle to continue.

I give it a 7 because there wasnt any part that blew me away... not to say it sucked or anything... but nothing that made me wet my pants. lol

things i liked:

1. its old... in my opinion the best jams/music are not of this era

2. dudes playing traditional grip <3

While there was nothing that particularly struck me about the drumming style, the coordination and spectacle of the entire thing was incredible. To be able to get that many drummers to be that precisely in synch with each other while remembering where and how to move around is rather amazing.

The drummer is pretty sick, very technical, sort-of reminds me of The Apex Theory's drummer. I don't like the band though because of their name and their views though (Atheism). Otherwise I would say they are pretty good, music-wise.

For your information, they aren't really atheistic, it's just their name. I don't know the beliefs of all of the members (my stalking hasn't gone THAT far... yet...) but it doesn't translate into their lyrics. They're more geared towards things like nature (as best demonstrated by their album Elements).

As for your drummer, I'll give him an 9. He did have some great speed and precision, but at some points, like the beginning, he just seemed to do the same thing over and over. He really did have some great moves in the middle of the video and towards the end, though. Not bad at all.

i love the fact that theres multiple drummers playing the same thing... that is the true test of ones technical ability.... yea can you play it... but can you play it "right" and "in beat".

too bad the video is so outta focus... i woulda loved to read those music bars.

And to comment on your vid. I really liked it. Some really fast stuff on there and I love the groove he hits at around 1:15. I'll give it an 8.5.

here's another from me. This time Sheila E. , one of my favorite drummers/percissionists. I saw do one of the best solo's I've ever seen in 1988(?) on the Lovesexy Tour when she was drumming for Prince. This one is damn fine as well. From the Sign O' the Time Tour.

not too bad. I like Sheila.... however i think she shines brighter behind a set of timbales and percussion..... but thats just me.

I'll give it an 8.... good speed.... good "crowd friendly" licks for the appropriate venue... a Prince concert.

one of my fav clips of all time. Steve Gadd at Zildjian day.

steve gadd is one of the few drummers that (in my opinion) can TRULY make a song from a drumset. notice how he keeps the beat going throughout.... simple grooves with complicated yet perfectly fitting fills and licks. ..... As opposed to the typical "how much stuff can you hit in 5 mins" that i see so often.
