I wrote a blog about why you shouldn't worry...

about the vocal part of Rock Band. I'm sure it's filled with mis-information, but It was a blind guess, and hopefully will help people realize that Harmonix actually *knows* how to do Vocals in a video game.

Dude, My girlfriend plays the American Idol version of Kaoreoke Revolution and thats all it does, is detect pitch.

My girlfriend can sing pretty damn good, but if she follows the pitch notes in the game she sounds stupid. and if she sings it her way then she gets a ???ty score but it sounds better.

I personally don't like the way the these games do vocals, as long as you can hold a note you win, and it sounds like ??? and it makes playing this game at a party pretty weak.

I'm personally not to thrilled about the vocal aspect of Rock Band, because there are alot of songs out there that are awesome but the singer can't sing worth a ???.

Like Institutionalized. Suicidal Tendancies blew up California, made there own style, and there ???ing punk gods, but we all know Mike muir can't sing worth a ???.

Minor Threat, RATM, and ???ing Dead Kennedys? I don't think any of those ground breaking bands could hold a note if they tried.

Have you ever heard the original Freya? The lead singers voice cracks like a 12 year old boy. But check my myspace: http://www.myspace.com/blingshyne2

So what are we looking at? White snake? Poison? Panic at the dick hole? Jewel!?

I always put my faith in harmonix and I'm sure they'll pull this off, but right now I don't see how. Unless you don't get points for singing.

Harmonix didn't make Karaoke Revolution: American Idol, so that's probobly why she doesn't sound good.

Also it doesn't matter if your girlfriend sounds good or not, if she can't do the song in the right pitch and still sound good then she's not a good singer.

I dunno, I think there's a little bit more to what BlingShyne2 says than you're giving him credit for. There are a lot of songs where the tone and inflection are more important than the pitch.

While I deny it to most of my fellow computer nerds, I did a little time in junior college on a vocal music scholarship and when the discussion regarding popular music singing came up the message was clear: it's not about quality, it's about distinction. Unique and/or interesting voices can be just as appealing as "proper" vocal work and often make things more successful.

I just recently played Karaoke Revolution for the first time, we picked up the XBox version at a local EBGames after finding out about Rock Band. The best example of this phenomena that I can think of is when I first tried a shot at "Brick House."

I'm decent at singing, but I'm typically not that great at karaoke just as a simple matter of range. Eh, I'm a tall goofy bass. So I'm playing "Brick House", having a good time, and--of course--I'm doing big gravely scoops on "house". It sounded great, the crowd loved it, but it scored poorly.

I don't have any idea how to improve this, but I could foresee having a mode where it's true "karaoke" (unscored) for the vocals while the rest of the band jams in traditional fashion. At least then my musician friends that sing in local bands and already have their own distinctive vocalization styles will be able to front for my poser Rock Bang group.
