    no wave appreciation thread.

are there any fans of no wave here?
i mostly stick to the original new york scene bands, but there are definitely some other gems out there such as bride of no no, the flying luttenbachers, made in mexico, etc.

i'll probably try putting up some vids and additional info like i did with the krautrock thread. i'm kinda awful at starting new threads, by the way.

i love pylon... i've always just thought of them as post-punk band, but they definitely sound like they had a sturdy no wave influence in a lot of their songs.

definitely a good band to bring into the discussion.

What is the contrast of differences between No Wave and New Wave, at any rate?

Also, Talking Heads could easily fall into this thread's subject matter aswell.

no wave is typically based pretty strongly on atonality as well as a focus on texture over melody.
i personally wouldn't consider talking heads no wave, though they share some similarities in their genre-blending and rhythmic repetition.

I was going to be a smartass and say "Coke vs Heroin", or just "Fashion", but there's something deeper. New-Wave, no matter how weird it got, was always pretty poppy (Devo is a prime example of poppy New Wave weirdness). No-wave was sort of a backlash to that. I'm hard pressed to ever get a sonic youth song from before Bad Moon Rising stuck in my head, or Swans from before the Burning World, and you can completely forget about any contortions or foetus stuff ever getting lost in your head (although I'd been known to play that thirwell/lydia lunch cover of dont fear the reaper when I dj'd).
Does anyone chart anymore? le sigh.

actually, i get this stuff stuck in my head on a pretty regular basis...
i think "contort yourself", "lovin' in the red", "you can't be funky", "too many creeps", and several others are quite catchy.
