Any recommendation for a cheap-ish eletric guitar?

I think I'm about ready for an upgrade from my old Fender Squier, and I'm looking to get a guitar around the $350-$400 range for Christmas. This is the guitar that I've been looking at, as it looks pretty cool and I heard some good stuff about it. But I don't want to take the plunge without knowing for sure that I'm getting the right guitar.

So can anybody recommend a good guitar in my price range?

it'll probably be a fairly unpopular vote, but i think danelectro's guitars are perfect for beginners.

The XL-5 and the XL-2 are both AMAZING guitars, I own a Les Paul and I still like the look and sound of the XL-5 better. I got mine for 400, I;m not sure how much they normally sell for though...

My advice would be to go to a music store (or pawn shop) and try a few guitars to see how they feel to you first. I used to own an Ibanez, and if you like metal, shredding solos and the Strat-style body it's a good choice, although it may seem a bit lighter/more delicate than your Squier. If you like a warmer tone and heftier feel to your guitar, check out an Epiphone SG. This is my current guitar. It looks great, plays great, and sounds great. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/p...tar?sku=518291

These (except the $1000+ one, of course). They're great quality, and and don't exceed $270.

If you don't go to a chain store like guitar center you can bargain with them. I got a $1,000 Gretsch for $500 and the guy threw in a banjo. So I recommend the ma and pa shops because they will do more to keep you as a customer.

I would love to get stuff from a pawn shop, but there are very, very few shops in this city that sell guitars at all, and the ones that do suck. So internet is kinda my only option.

I've been checking out the SG, and it looks very nice. The Hagstrom guitars actually look pretty neat, but I can't seem to find them online, so that probably isn't an option unfortunately.

The Ibanez looks cool and I still might want to get that, but someone tell me: I play quite a bit of metal, but I also enjoy playing many other genres of music. Is the Ibanez good for anything besides metal?

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys. Any more would be welcome.
