I think that the hippie movement, along with tons of other movements/generations before and after, started out with a fairly clear objective and a philosophy that at least had a basis in some form of logic. Maybe there's a bit of idealism involved which doesn't really help anything, but it doesn't really hurt, either. Eventually, this movement/generation gets some publicity, and starts to attract people who really don't understand the philosophy, but just want to take part because it's the "in" thing to do, usually leading to the movement/generation becoming a mockery of itself. I guess what I'm trying to say is that your teacher probably wasn't involved in hippie-dom until the Summer of Love started.
