I'm pretty sure the instant you file a lawsuit over your music your creativity and passion dry up and wither anyhow.

But he didn't willfully leave to play elsewhere. He willfully played elsewhere, thought the band should take some time off, they decided they were going to record a new album anyway, so he then left. That's pretty much undisputed at this point.

And, to be honest, after hearing A Dramatic Turn Of Events, I can see why Portnoy thought they needed a break. They just sounded stale.

EDIT: Portnoy has given some more information... no lawsuit was filed, just a notice of summons between him and the other members of the band. From the sounds of things, it's mostly bookkeeping sort of crap, but the lawyers have gotten involved.

Indeed, can't wait for some new stuff. I didn't have the demos, so I grabbed them from the page yesterday.

I've realized that The Velvet Underground is an acquired taste. I've worked at acquiring it by starting out with "Heroin". I found it appealing...until the last minute and a half. Distortion city, man.
We need sludgey and droney and stonery metal:
    Dirge
    Sleep
    Bongripper
    Sunn O)))
    Electric Wizard
    Earth
    Neurosis
    Cult of Luna

If you're not yet a fan of distortion, you're much better off starting with Loaded for The Velvet Underground.

Thanks, I'll try that. I'm just trying to expand my musical tastes, and I figured TVU would be an important part of it.

Oh, The Velvet Underground is definitely essential listening, but the band's best album isn't the easiest one to get into. It should be easier to digest The Velvet Underground & Nico after Loaded, though.
