I think we're going through another one of those huge phases like the late 50's and early 80's with all these bands making HUGE songs then going off into oblivion. Fun. is an example of this IMO, along with Gotye...

Gotye's been rather popular everywhere outside of North America even before Somebody That I Used To Know (namely Australia), so that probably doesn't apply here

Owl City is a better example though

In that way, yes, we're likely to see even more parabolic career arcs in the years to come, some of which putting the prior boomlets in the 50s and 80s to shame.

I feel like that's what a few alternative bands like Muse and Radiohead are doing. Muse is probably going to go back to the Absolution-era stuff after the disaster that was The Resistance. After listening to Radiohead's King of Limbs, I feel like they are heading back to Kid Aish stuff. Also, a band I feel that may go down the tubes with their second release is Foster the People. The first album was very radio-friendly and popular, but they might be running out of steam.

If anything, The Resistance was an attempt for them to try to become a hit-making sort of band... the problem was that most of the "standout" tracks on that album were blatant pastiches of other artists. Unfortunately for them, that process basically sucked all of the buzz that their fanbase usually would create over a new single.

Yeah, that album was really bad and I blame Fueled By Ramen for it. In terms of what that label has released over the years, it's one of the most consistently bad record labels out there. It's a shame that Monae was so woefully underutilized on "We Are Young."

Outside of the Exogenesis Symphony (which really is the standout piece of The Resistance), my favorite pastime with that album was just to go "hmm, who did they rip off this time?" Depeche Mode, Queen, possibly some SOAD in there as well... usually not a good sign when the influences become transparent.
