There's been academic/classical/industrial artists much before The Beastie Boys that thoroughly work with sampling into their music that there were practically music genres based around it.

Also, remember the map of metal? Check this out:

It's a lot more opinionated and less refined cosmetically, but it's a pretty good reference nonetheless.

RO: Despite their praise for taking the RBN so seriously, Amberian Dawn is an average band with terrible lyrics.

Got sucked into that link. Somehow found Fear Factory, Sisters Of Mercy, and White Zombie in there (didn't think that would happen).
Bands I'd love to see as DLC for Rock Band:

    Bathory []
    Bal Sagoth []
    Amorphis []
    Emperor [X]
    Enslaved []

Oh, absolutely. I don't disagree with that. The Beasties and The Poppies elevated sampling into a whole 'nother category, though, in addition to doing the sampling thing far better than most other groups before AND after them.

When I say sampling in this case I, of course, don't include found sounds. I'm strictly talking song-sampling.

Also, that website is great fun, but the Coldwave description - as well as the artists he recc'ed - are totally inaccurate. Plus, including the Silicon Teens as French Pop?

RO: While the second half of Within the Realm of a Dying Sun is great, I wish it lived up the first half.

I'm fond of most power metal lyrics.

But instrumentally I agree with you.

So am I for the most part. It's just that their lyrics just seem... well I don't know, but I think it has to do with the way that they don't quite rhyme a whole lot and usually seem a bit redundant.

Rhyming isn't really a concern for most power metal or symphonic metal bands in general. Don't really care for Amberian Dawn, though.

On Beastie Boys and sampling: While they certainly weren't the first to sample well, they were certainly one of the first artists that made me stop and think, "you know, this sampling stuff can be pretty cool". The first, of course, was DJ Shadow.
